Single for the Holidays

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

There’s no season like the holiday season to make a girl crave a relationship and feel  the need to desperately stand under mistletoes. For anyone who has experienced being single for 1+ year (aka perpetually single), like myself, they know that from the last Thursday in November to the ringing in of the New Year, being single tends to suck more than usual. Taylor Swift once said, “Being alone is not the same as being lonely.” As a dedicated Swift fan I would have to agree with her, however this statement proves Taylor has never felt the never-ending feeling of loneliness while cruisin’ (or crawling) through the holidays solo. For the single ladies, the feelings for summer flings have since ended, and new school year fall crushes have already faded, leaving a complete drought in any hope of a love life before the leaves begin to fall. The first sound of a Christmas jingle is the first warning signal: the dreaded burden of being alone for the holidays has arrived and a series of lonesome-feeling events are about to begin unfolding…

1.) Date Parties

‘Tis the season for organized holiday events for clubs and organizations that encourage plus ones. Cue the dreaded panic of single girls everywhere. The frantic searching for a qualified candidate begins, which usually results in going stag and being forced to watch couples in coordinated outfits and canoodling all night.

2.) Hearing About Other People’s Love Lives

Being back in town and catching up with hometown friends is always a good time. But when you find yourself slowly taking a step back from the conversation and having to listen to your friends spill the details about the exciting new men in their lives, you learn to act like you care.

3.) 20 Questions

Reluctantly walking into family gatherings with prepared answers to the inevitable FAQs about your love life like: “so do you have a boyfriend?” “why don’t you have a boyfriend?” or “a girlfriend?”  And finally… “have you met anyone you could see yourself with in the future?”

4.) Presents

While those who are tied down will be receiving Pandora rings, and beautiful diamond necklaces…the only piece of jewelry us single girls will be getting this Christmas is a “daughter” Alex & Ani from the rents.

5.) Netflix and Actually Just Chillin’

Netflix and chill literally means exactly what it says for those flyin’ solo. This season cold Sundays will be spent in bed alone, binge watching Grey’s Anatomy, and probably shivering from lack of body heat.

6.) Facing Exes

There’s nothing like leaving school and finally being able to go home for the holidays. However, one thing every girl is fearing is seeing their old high school loves. The notoriously awkward encounter almost always occurs at an event with an audience, like the high school’s Thanksgiving football game to give you just the de ja vu you’ve been dreading. You’ve spent the whole semester trying to forget about him and just when you think you’ve moved on they hit you with the, “It’s so nice to see you.”

7.) New Years Kiss

The only thing the single girls will be resoluting for this New Year is to have a boyfriend to kiss when the ball drops next New Years Eve. There is nothing like being surrounded by couples kissing and in love to make you realize that you might actually be forever alone.

8.) Back to School Motivation

When you’ve finally almost made it through the holidays and it’s time to unite with other single girls back at college to start looking for Spring Flings…
