The One Book Every Woman Should Read

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

Whether you’re in a relationship, dating around, or flat out single, every woman should pick up the book Why Men Love B*tches written by Sherry Argov. I know, I know, the title of this book is a little aggressive and not a lot of women want to be referred to as ‘a b*tch’ but this book changes the idea behind being ‘a b*tch’.

As Argov writes, being a b*tch does not mean that you are a mean, stuck up woman who won’t give a man the time of day. The b*tch is a woman who knows who she is and is not willing to compromise on any of her values. This is such an important lesson for any woman to learn, but more specifically, young women. Young women have been growing up in a world where our culture has told us that we owe something to guys if they take us out to dinner or buy us nice things. This book will tell you differently (I took it as channeling my inner Beyonce).

Being a b*tch today is more important than ever because of our societal norms. Especially if you’re in college, you know the hook up culture and online “dating” scene all too well. Being a b*tch doesn’t necessarily mean that you absolutely want a relationship; being a b*tch means that you will let any guy walk all over you. It doesn’t matter if he’s taking you out on dates or you’re sleeping at his room Thursday-Saturday. The book is more geared towards women who are looking for that ideal man who respects them while not compromising their values, but if you take everything you read with a grain of salt, this book and its teachings are applicable to almost any situation.

I picked up this book from a friend at work who began reading it after she and her boyfriend decided to “take a break”. The book describes how sometimes the ‘nice girl’ will think she’s giving that extra 100% when all the guy sees is her being extremely clingy and needy. The book goes into more detail about every situation you could possibly think of and it’s great because Argov had interviewed actual men about their thought process during dating and relationships.

Out of all the books that I read this summer (two. I read two books this summer), Why Men Love B*tches was my absolute favorite. Every woman should read this book. My mother, who is happily married, even enjoyed reading excerpts from this book, so it does not matter your relationship status – this book has incredible life lessons. Of course it made me realize that everything I had done in almost any relationship I had been in was extremely counterproductive, but now I know how to be a b*tch (in the best way possible)!

And the best part about this book is that it has an index at the back incase you need to return to a specific chapter later on down the road!
