Not Everyone’s Cup of Tea

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

We all start life not having to be perfect, rather to be imperfect and make mistakes. Our parents don’t ever expect us to be perfect – they see us as these little beings that are just ourselves, but society tells us that being imperfect isn’t ok. We are all influenced to want to be the kid that everyone likes, have all the friends, and get along with every person we meet. Growing up, many of us strive to be that person – even if it means changing ourselves from who we are. We have been predetermined by society to want to be “popular” or “the most liked” and thus throw ourselves into changing ourselves to be that person.

The reality of life is that you won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, not everyone is going to like you, and though it doesn’t always feel good, it is life and we must be vulnerable to be comfortable. Instead of being everyone’s cup of tea, you are going to be some people’s shot of tequila. Though this euphemism may sound like it is just for laughs and to be funny, believe me, it is, but it is also a great metaphor for life. Not everyone is going to like you for who you are, instead some people are going to love you for you. Life is all about picking and choosing the people you decide to surround yourself with. We are worthy of love and affection and in order to feel that we have to understand the struggle that it took to get their which makes it so much more worth it.
