My Top Three Scary Movie Recommendations For Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

In my opinion, the best part of the year consists of scary movies, fun costumes, themed parties, and spooky vibes. So of course, Halloween is my favorite holiday. Although I love a good horror movie any time of the year, watching scary movies during the spooky season makes the experience so much better. And as someone who’s watched an alarming amount of horror movies, I feel somewhat qualified to give reviews on my top three scary movies/shows that I highly recommend to anyone that is an avid horror fan like me.

The first movie I recommend is The Strangers (2008), which was one of the first horror movies I ever watched. This made my top three because it’s a good starting point for those who want to start slow or who don’t watch scary movies often. It’s good for first time watchers because it’s easy to follow and it isn’t too graphic. What makes this movie so good is how relatable it feels. Most of us have probably experienced the fear that this movie is based on, which brings the hypothetical to life. I rate The Strangers 7/10.

My next recommendation is Hereditary (2018), which I would say is my favorite psychological horror movie ever. This movie is definitely not for the faint-hearted, I would say it’s one of the most disturbing films I’ve ever seen. But if gross, disturbing, psychologically messed up movies are your thing like they are mine, then I highly recommend it. The acting and cinematography in this film sets it apart from others in this genre, and although the plot has mixed reviews, there’s no arguing that Hereditary is a must see if you love horror movies. I rate Hereditary 9/10.

My last recommendation is the TV series The Haunting of Hill House (2018). I love this series for so many reasons, but the biggest one being that it’s complicated in the best way. The alternating plotlines are complex, but interesting enough to keep your attention and draw you into the story. Each episode will have you on the edge of your seat, filled with mind-blowing plot twists and jump scares. This series is great for those who like scary movies with more drama and supernatural themes that have a developed and intriguing plot line. I rate The Haunting of Hill House 9/10.
