iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S: Should You Upgrade?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

It might feel as though the iPhone 5 just came out, but Apple has just released not one, but two new iPhones—the 5C and 5S. Before you start worrying that your iPhone 5 is obsolete, check out the specs behind these two new phones.

There’s a multitude of different specs (short for speculations a.k.a the cool things your phone has/does) for both iPhones, but you probably aren’t interested in most of them. Let’s be real, we really just want to know if 1.) there’s enough room for our 2,472 pictures and iTunes library 2.) what cool features have been added, and 3.) if the battery life has gotten ANY better this time around. Since the iPhone 5 has been discontinued, here are your two new upgrade options for iPhone:

iPhone 5C:

For those of you who have been hesitant on stepping into the iPhone world or who have been turned off by the steep price tag of the iPhone 5, the iPhone 5C may be the right phone for you. Compared to the iPhone 5, the 5C is almost identical.

PROS:

  • Comes in 5 different colors: white, blue, green, yellow, and neon-y pink
  • IOS 7 operating system
  • CHEAP! Only $99 for the 16 GB with a 2-year contract
  • 10 hours of talk time instead of 8 hours

CONS:

  • Plastic body instead of aluminum
  • Slightly heavier than iPhone 5

iPhone 5S:

Ok, now time for the REAL upgraded iPhone. If you missed the boat on getting the iPhone 5 before it disappeared forever, but still want the coolest new iPhone and can’t wait for the 6, then this could be your next upgrade.

PROS:

  • Touch ID: instead of the typical lock-screen, the center button has now turned into a fingerprint sensor that you can use to unlock your phone as well as confirm iTunes purchases
  • Burst mode: takes 10 pictures per second and automatically picks the best one so you don’t have to awkwardly stay in the same pose for 5 minutes trying to get the best picture
  • Front I-Sight camera has been improved: your Snapchats and selfies will never look better
  • M7 processor: yeah, not totally sure what that even means but we do know that it makes iPhone 5S TWICE as fast as the iPhone 5 so you can do more in less time and save your battery life
  • Camera has been upgraded to let in more light and basically make your low-lighting pictures from Scorps look great
  • Comes in gold!

CONS:

  • Doesn’t come in black: colors now include silver, “space gray”, and gold
  • High price—$199 for the 16 GB—for not having a lot of new features
  • No changes in the display, size, and screen from the iPhone 5

CONCLUSION:

The iPhone 5C really doesn’t have anything that different from the iPhone 5 and it still comes with the same old Siri and the same camera. It does come with color options to make them look pretty, but then again, that’s what cases are for. The best part about this one is that its $100 cheaper than its predecessor. So if you’re not ready to shell out $199 to upgrade your 4 or 4S, then check out this cheaper option.

The iPhone 5S comes with a few cool features (love the Burst mode) but not as many as hoped. Both cameras did come with an upgrade, but you will hardly notice a difference if you’re currently using iPhone 5. It’s almost certain the iPhone 6 will have the same features in addition to even better ones. Basically, if you absolutely cannot wait for next year for the iPhone 6 to be unveiled, then the iPhone 5S is a good option and one of the hottest phones on the market.

Both phones go on sale on September 20 and available for pre-order now on Apple’s website.
