How Working in Retail Changed My Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

Growing up I was always painfully shy, turning to books and horses to ease my awkwardness (yes- I was that horse girl please don’t judge me). Being an introvert, my interactions with people were somewhat limited and often clunky or robotic. I just didn’t know what to say to certain people that I was unfamiliar with or how to come across to others. At school and in class I’d never speak up, especially if I didn’t feel comfortable with my peers, and to this day this is still sometimes an issue for me. In May, I decided to get a job at a cute little store in Portsmouth where a few of my friends worked. This was my first official job and the interviewing process was nerve-wracking to the point where I definitely was shaking a little.

Somehow, I got the job and my experience working with customers has honestly changed my life. In my position, working behind the counter and greeting people as they enter the store is a huge part of my daily life at work. At first just saying things like “good morning,” or “hi how are you today” were extremely difficult for me and made me really nervous. At the beginning, it was a little forced but throughout the summer it became much easier and soon I found that having longer conversations with customers became a fun experience. Eventually, I learned to love not only just the regulars that came in but also the tourists who spoke very little English. I loved that each experience with someone was unique; you never have the same conversation twice unless nothing is really said. Most of the time it’s just really nice to hear about someone else’s day! This job doesn’t feel like a job- it feels like I’m meeting new people every day and making sure they leave the store with happy hearts and usually a few gifts :) It’s also a big confidence booster when customers are impressed with your knowledge of the products and you’re able to help them find something that brings them joy and provide them with a welcoming experience.

I have grown so much since May that a lot of my friends and family have made comments about the way my interactions with them and others have changed. I feel a lot more open with my communication skills and genuinely enjoy striking up conversations with strangers even when I’m not behind the counter. I still have my moments of uncertainty and social anxiety but for the most part I have completely changed- for the best, of course and I am so grateful for being able to have this opportunity to grow as a person.
