Why every girl deserves a weekly date with themselves :)

Being an only child, I’ve gotten really used to being alone. I love being an only child and wouldn’t trade it for the world, and to be quite honest, I really enjoy spending time by myself sometimes! Don’t get me wrong: I love my friends more than anything, but sometimes it can be really fun to just take a day and do whatever YOU want to do, no matter how boring the activity may seem. Coming to college and sharing a space for the first time was a really eye-opening experience for me for so many reasons, but one of the things I’ve noticed across all my friends is that liking to be by yourself is a quality that isn’t common, especially within people of our age group.

It can be easy, especially during freshman year, to feel like you are constantly on the go. My life at home, compared to school, is definitely quieter and pretty calm because I’m not typically surrounded by people all the time, so I struggled a lot at the beginning of freshman year because I couldn’t quite understand why I “didn’t feel like myself”. I quickly realized that in order to give myself the grace I needed, I just needed to find a few moments to myself! It doesn’t have to be anything crazy, either. Heading to my favorite coffee shop to get a fun drink, a hot girl walk around campus, reading my book, or an aimless drive with music blasting are a few of my favs that are guaranteed to help me feel a little bit more like myself and have a much clearer mind.

A big thing that I tell my friends often is that these moments are necessary for EVERYONE, even if you like to be with people at all moments. Especially if you’re in a dorm room or sharing a bedroom with someone, these moments of peace where you’re by yourself are make or break. For me, these moments help me feel less overwhelmed because I feel like I have the means to think about what I need to accomplish, both academic and personal goals, uninterrupted. I also take this time to listen to my favorite music, watch my favorite shows or Youtube videos, or do honestly anything that’s guaranteed to make me really happy. Time taken out of my day specifically for me to be zen is what helps me be the best friend, student, and person I can be :).
