One thing that’s predictable about the ever-changing fashion trends is that they will eventually repeat themselves. Seemingly every day, a new “vintage” style sneaks its way back around into the trend cycle and onto our pinterest boards. With fashion icons like Matilda Djerf and Hailey Bieiber influencing Gen Z with different aesthetics, such as the more recent “Coastal Grandmother” or “Clean Girl” style, it’s sometimes difficult to resist the urge to splurge on items seen on social media. Instead of falling into the trap of consumerism and fast fashion brands by choosing to buy these trends brand-new, I have found a special love in hunting for and purchasing items on my seasonal wishlist second hand. Once you get into the habit of searching the racks at your local thrift store or consignment shop, you may find yourself realizing that it’s less challenging to build up your wardrobe with clothing that has already had a previous home. Not only can you score and find high quality items at a lower price point, but you’ll also discover unique items that suit your own personal style that you would not be able to find at large retail stores. I’ve always loved thrifting, but I decided to put my shopping skills to the test and see what 2022 trends I could find at the start of the season. I stumbled upon some pieces that feel very relevant to what’s current now, and they’ve immediately become some of my favorite items in my closet. Below are some of the trends that I kept my eye out for and was able to find throughout the various stores that I visited.

  1. Breezy Button Downs and Blazers

When it comes to this category, don’t forget to check the men’s section! You’ll find high-quality and soft button-downs that’ll become wardrobe staples immediately. This season I have found plenty of tan and brown blazers as well as pinstripe button downs that are great for layering during the transition from summer to fall.

  1. Maxi Skirts and Dresses

The longer look of this trend is perfect for the transition from warmer to cooler months.  Maxi skirts feel particularly fresh as a new styling staple that offers an option other than grabbing the jeans you have been wearing all year. It’s also fun to play around with proportions as you can continue to wear crop tops and cut outs from your summer staples. Although they’re an essential summer item, you can easily carry them into fall. During the summer you can wear them with a top or tee, and during the fall it is fun to dress them up with boots or a sweater, making it effortlessly versatile. I love wearing slip dresses or skirts with long cardigans or long coats for extra warmth.

  1. Bomber Jackets

Outerwear is definitely one of the more expensive things you’ll be purchasing as the temperature starts to become cooler, but when it comes to materials like leather, wool and suede, the thrift store often has much more affordable options. Not only will you be saving money, but these pre-worn pieces will also save you the trouble of breaking in these tougher materials. Vintage denim and bombers have a relaxed fit, are comfortable, and immediately give that “cool girl” factor for that model off duty look.

  1. Cargo Pants

This pant style is a Y2K trend that has made a more recent comeback. Sometimes, it can be tempting to buy what’s trendy at the thrift store without even thinking about it, but it’s important to make sure that it is still wearable. Cargo pants are an easy trend to work with as they are comfortable, have pockets and can be dressed up or down. Some brands that I’ve seen while thrifting are Gap, Lee, Carhart and Dickies. If you can’t get on board with this current style, then opt for a neutral trouser that has similar versatility.

  1. Oversized Sweaters and Sweater Vests

Whether it’s a cardigan, button-closure, tie-front, turtleneck or chunky style, sweaters are probably one of the most sought-after closet staples every fall. I have purchased great-quality knits from L.L. Bean, J. Crew, Loft, Banana Republic and other brands that look like they came straight out of the back of your mom’s closet. You can’t go wrong when styling these pieces as they’re classic layering pieces that can be thrown over or under graphic tees, button downs and so much more. You can never have too many sweaters during the colder months!

  1. Saturated Shades

When it comes to what I wear, I often gravitate towards neutral shades and soft hues that complement each other and can be interchanged very easily. When it comes to thrifting, however, I feel more inclined to branch out and try on some bolder colored pieces that I may overlook if it weren’t for the affordable price tag. I try to invest more in staple pieces and look for statement items secondhand. The excitement of finding pieces that are out of your comfort zone will motivate you to wear it more often. Some colors that I have been loving for this season are cobalt blue, kelly or hunter green, variations of reds and burnt orange.

  1. Oversized Scarves

Very long, very wide and very fringed mohair scarves will definitely still be trending this fall, and, fortunately, it is one of the easier trends to find secondhand! An oversized statement scarf will not only keep you warm, but the blanket-like accessory will ensure you’ll stand out with even a basic outfit. Brands such as Acne Studios offer cozy and fuzzy options in a range of vibrant colors and patterns – the perfect antidote to the more neutral hues that I have previously mentioned. The upside to incorporating an oversized scarf into your look is that it doesn’t require much effort; simply dress as you normally would and throw your thrifted find on!

  1. Leather Boots

Shoes are definitely much harder to look for when hitting the thrift stores, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible! A quality pair of leather boots can go a long way for both the fall and winter seasons, and you can wear them with practically anything. Western style, lug sole, over-the-knee and platform boots are all options that will be a great addition to your closet this year.
