I walked on to campus last year as a freshman knowing no one. I had thought that was a good thing because I desperately wanted to reinvent myself. I wanted to meet new people and try new things. I realized very quickly that that wasn’t going to be as easy as I had thought, considering University Day, the day you can sign up to be in an organization, was a whole three weeks into school…. Needless to say, I had a hard time entertaining myself early on during that first semester.

On the second day of classes, I got lost. Little did I know, getting lost was going to be one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I was looking for room Theater 2 in the MUB (confusing, right?). Coincidentally, another girl was looking for Theater 2 as well, and we ended up having class together. Despite the extremely odd place to have a class, this girl and I ended up becoming relatively good friends.

Yes, yes I know there’s a boring backstory to my point, but I promise I’m getting there!

Anyways, so, the following weekend she invited me out with her and her friends. I was in no place to turn down an offer to hangout with anyone, so I very willingly accepted. On that Friday night, I went to her dorm room to meet her friends. When I walked in I saw Danielle Tremblay and Gabby Germany standing on the far side of the room. At the time, I had no clue who they were and they had no clue who I was. We went to the Lodges that night. It turned out to be a house full of people from a random town in Massachusetts; people who Danielle, Gabby, and I didn’t know. We ended up leaving and doing our own thing… for the rest of the school year. Yeah, they’re two of my best friends now.

So, here’s my point:

Friends come at the weirdest, most unexpected times. Who would’ve thought that my whole life would change just from getting lost? I know I didn’t. I thought I was just a newbie who had no clue where she was. So take a deep breath, live your life, and I promise you something amazing will fall into your lap. Maybe not right away, but it will at some point. And yes, you should still definitely sign up for clubs and orgs on campus! You never know who you might meet there or what secret hidden talent you might have!

So, sitting here as a sophomore writing this article, I can confidently say that almost everything and everyone I have in my life right now was from that random Tuesday last August. A day that I didn’t expect, didn’t plan for, but wouldn’t change for anything.

Hi:) I'm a junior at the University of New Hampshire majoring in Communication and minoring in Business Administration! Aside from writing for HerCampus, I am usually either doing homework or going to the gym. But, when I have a free second I love hanging out with friends, scrolling through Pinterest, or getting outside and going running or hiking! :)
