As the school year comes to an end, (and for some of us, school itself coming to an end…) that means it’s almost time for those mid-July Durham cravings. There are tons of good restaurants around here, but here is a list of a few favorites that I always seem to find myself missing:
Stillings/HOCO/Philly: (meal plan/swipes)While it doesn’t always seem ideal on a Saturday morning to have to force yourself out into the sunlight and walk to the dining hall, (often in the same outfit as you wore the night before…), embrace these lovely establishments while you can. All-day omelettes, hot cookies, cheesy bread, and staying so long that it turns into the next meal time will be missed when you realize one day that all you know how to make is oatmeal (which you had to charge to credit).
DHOP: $-$$$ (because we all have those “pizza for everyone” nights…)All of my best nights have ended here. Like, I’m no New Yorker, but I’ve had my fair share of pizza and DHOP is just…so good. I’m drooling just thinking about it. I <3 you, DHOP. I really do.
Aroma Joe’s: $Extreme honorable mention to all of the other coffee shops in/around Durham (BNG, the Hut, Crackskull’s, etc.) because they’re all fabulous, but I will forever be loyal to AJ’s. Everyone is so friendly and they never seem to judge me when I go in 3+ times a day. If you’re not a coffee person (how…) they also have hot chocolate, smoothies, and desserts that I stare at longingly each time I go in.
Franz’s: $$Ugh, best egg-sammies ever. I’ve never tried the JB which I know is a travesty because apparently it’s the greatest thing to ever grace this world. Downtown Durham is known for its novelty spots, and this retro-style favorite is just that.
Kaleida-Scoop: $When the weather starts to get warmer, there is no better way to celebrate than with a visit to this gem. Delicious ice cream, fro-yo, and shakes. Purple Cow is bae.
Union Court: ($$/swipes)This had to have its own slot because I will miss the Southwest Chicken Salad more than I can put into words. I don’t understand why when I attempt to make a salad it never comes out nearly as good as when someone else makes it for me, but I would move into UC if I could.
