For me, food seems to be the largest expense and it is taking up all my money! I have tried to find new ways to decrease my food spending, but still have amazing meals. Here are my tips and tricks to keeping costs down in Durham.

  • Cats Cupboard: On campus, we have an area called Cats Cupboard that provides free food items. Some of which being non-perishable items, ingredients, bread, and even some amazing pre-made meals. Many of the meals even come from The Works downtown! It is located in the basement of the MUB and opens at 4 p.m. on week days.
  • Aldi: Going to Aldi before any other grocery store has saved me so much money. The produce is usually so much cheaper, and you can find great reduced prices on your everyday grocery needs. For example, at Aldi the avocados are $0.99 each but at Trader Joes they are typically closer to $2 a piece.
  • Get the apps: Most grocery stores have apps with exclusive deals. If you sign up and make an account, the deals are amazing. You can get $20 off of a certain amount and there are some insane money-savers that you can retrieve from the apps. For people without cars, the Hannafords app is great and always provides money- saving deals.
  • Work at a restaurant: I work at Union Court here on campus and am able to eat on my breaks. This saves me money on breakfast and working at restaurants is such a hack! Most restaurants allow their employees to get free or half priced food.
Aliana currently attends the University of New Hampshire, dual majoring with Business Admin: Management and Sustainability. Her favorite place is anywhere near the beach and on the ocean. She is NH born and raised but has spent a majority of her childhood in Ipswich, MA where she continues to frequent. Ipswich being near the water, has been a huge driver for Aliana's sustainability practices, as she was able to view the environment with a new perspective.
