Christmas On A College Budget

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.
  • Throw a party: Christmas shopping can be especially tough if you have a lot of friends on your list. One way to avoid spending money on each of them, however, is to have a holiday party and invite all of them. Have an adult rated secret Santa theme: everyone brings a different form of alcohol wrapped, draws a name, and gives it away. You may only be buying for one person, but everyone gets something.
  • Check out sale sites: As Christmas approaches, start signing up for sale websites like Hautelook, Ideeli, or Rue La La. These sites have fast but amazing sales on tons of designer clothing, jewelry, shoes, and accessories. Some sales have discounts up to 70% off, so you can score a luxury gift at a much lower price. Most sales open around noon and they sell out quickly, so look ahead for when the brands you are most interested in will be featured.
  • Make something: Remember when you were a little kid and you would give your mom the crappy project you made in art class? Well, this is along those same lines – family and loved ones enjoy your time and effort more than anything. Mom might not be as impressed with your macaroni necklace as she was when you were five, but what about an IOU for an hour of housework, or help in the kitchen? Think of your talents, and then think of how you can share them meaningfully.
  • Skip it all together:  Gift giving should never be an obligation, so if you are only buying a present for someone because you think they are getting something for you, just don’t. It can be awkward, but have that talk with friends and maybe even siblings before you begin shopping. Most likely, they are just as poor as you and will appreciate having one less person on their list.
  • Go for experiences: Cook a romantic dinner for your boyfriend, go out and cut down a Christmas tree with your roommates, or make gingerbread houses with friends. Whatever you choose, doing something new and exciting is usually better than anything you buy!
