Campus Celebrity: Gabby Greaves

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

To celebrate Black History month, this week’s Campus Celebrity highlights one of UNH’s most passionate student leaders. As a sophmore Gabby Greaves already has an impressive record of humanitarian and philanthropic activites on campus. In this article, Gabby talks about her involvement with various student organizations and the importance of Black History month!

Major: English and Women’s Studies

Year: Sophmore

Hometown: Brooklyn, New York

What types of organizations are you involved with here at UNH?

I am the secretary of the Black Student Union. We have our general meetings on Wednesdays and we talk about issues involving the black community in the U.S. and the outside the U.S. which is pretty cool. This week we talked about homophobia in the black community and transphobia in the black community so I led that discussion this week.

Is the Black Student Union promoting any black history month events on campus?

Yes, we are in the works of putting on a Nina Simone tribute. Nina Simone wanted to play classical music and she wanted to be known for that because she was really good at it, I believe she practiced at Julliard. Although that was her dream she saw a need during that time to talk about the black struggle so she took that route. She got a lot of flack for it because it was really challenging to talk about that so that took a toll on her. So the tribute is for her sacrifice of speaking out about black struggles for the people. The date for the event will be before the end of February and we are definitely going to play her music! it will be in collaboration with OMSA.

What is your role in the OMSA organization?

I am the OMSA statement co-coordinator, which is the office of multicultural student affairs. What we do is basically any social issues going on now, or any issues that we think are really important on the UNH campus as well, we talk about them and facilitate discussions. They are every other Thursday.

Next week we are actually going to have two discussions! One will be on Beyonce’s Formation video which is a really interesting discussion because at first, everyone was for it but now there is a huge discussion about whether it is a “black girl anthem” or if she just produced it for profit and the capitalization aspect of it since she announced her world tour right after with skyrocket prices. We will also be talking about diversity questioning whether we try to be diverse or just stop looking for validation in white spaces.

Are there any other orgs that you are apart of with upcoming events?

I am also a member of MOSIACO, which is the latino/ latina organization on campus. They have Carnival next week so we are very excited about that.

Explain what the MOSIACO Carnival event is all about.

Carnival is an event celebrated throughout the Caribbean and different parts of South America but they focus on Brazil. So their Carnival is in February, right before lent. So this UNH event is sort of a late celebration but they have somba dancers and really extravagant outfits that come to Carnival so you get to see that and experience that too! The event will be in the Granite State Room and they have really good Brazilian food!

How did you initially become involved in all of these student orgs?

I learned about all kinds of student orgs and got involved because of the UNH Connect program. It’s a pre-semester program for a week or two weeks depending on your major for students of color who are first generation, second generation lower income students. Basically, you take a mini-course that you get credit for to immerse yourself in the college experience. I was able to learn about how the UNH campus operates and all of the opportunities offered here.

The program pairs you with a mentor and about five other kids in a group. You become a part of bi-weekly meetings to stay in touch and up to date about your academics and social experience thus far.

What is your favorite part about being involved with all these different student orgs?

I like all the support it gives me, especially being a women student of color on campus. It gives me a place to kind of debrief with everything that you go through whether it is academic or emotional. Being apart of so many organizations I have found so many niches where I can go to and people whom I can talk with about specific issues.

Explain your recent experience with the Siris Radio interview regarding the New Hampshire primary candidates.

I got involved with the interview because my boss knew the guy who was leading the discussion, Dean Abudala. He asked my boss to recommend students who were super involved with the elections and the primaries. I was actually able to speak for Bernie Sanders last semester and I got to meet him! He was awesome. So my boss linked me to him and helped her get a few other students who were involved to talk. Basically the discussion was about issues coming up in the media concerning the politics and how each candidate deals with each issue and how they view it.  Specifically, we talked about why I was voting for Bernie Sanders and why he has so much of the young vote.

What are your future career goals?

Nothing to do with politics! I really want to be a professor that’s my ultimate goal. I want to be a professor in English with a concentration in the intersection of women and race.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I really like to write I am actually working on a book right now!
