Who doesn’t love a good guilty pleasure every now and then? For some it can be that late-night weekend DHOP, a shopping spree in downtown Portsmouth, or even missing class to hit the gym.

However, for some people their guilty pleasure comes in the form of award show season, which is all winter long and finishes off with the Academy Awards. The Academy Awards, currently in it’s 86th year, is also know as the Oscars. It celebrates the exceptional people in the film industry. These awards are a must-see for celebrity, and style obsessed fans. The wardrobes, the winners, and the surprises are exciting for all to watch.

Also with the Oscars being on a Sunday evening, there’s no better way to relax after a long tolling weekend then getting a group of friends together to enjoy the show.

Many viewers tune in early to watch the stars make their way down the red carpet. Here, viewers can find out who’s wearing what, and look for trends amongst the sea of ball gowns. Through out the past few years, we have been granted the gift of seeing some of the most beautiful dresses on celebrities. There are some who go for classic cuts and colors, while others are a bit more daring. Some style winners from the past include:

Halle Berry, in Elie Saab, 2002. Who doesn’t love strategically placed embroidery?

Hillary Swank, Guy Laroche, 2005. Backless is a timeless, chic trend.

Charlize Theron, John Galliano by Christian Dior, 2005. 4ft train. Dramatic statement piece. Can’t go wrong.

Penelope Cruz, Versace, 2007. Blush tones are widely versatile for many skin tones and it definitely worked for Cruz.
This year’s red carpet hosted many beutiful gowns as well. Trends from the past; nude tones, embrodiery and rich blues, meshed well with new styles, especially cap sleeves, white dresses and statment jewlery. Some of the best from the night:

Naomi Watts, Calvin Klein. She captivates all the popular trends of the night.

Jessica Biel, Chanel. Nude was the color of the night!

Cate Blanchett, Armani Prive. Very on point with the nude dress, sheer neck, and embroidery.

Lupita Nyong’o, Prada. The ice blue really pops against her skin tone.
