A Little Insight On Recruitment

Have you ever considered going through primary recruitment, either at UNH or anywhere else? Well I’m here to give you a little insight on recruitment and everything after.

When I was a freshman, I remember hearing so many girls in my dorm talk about how excited they were to join a sorority. I didn’t have many friends at the time, given that it was only the first week at a new school, but I thought about how much it would benefit me to try something new and get out of my comfort zone. As recruitment came closer I decided that it wasn’t for me and didn’t really think twice about it. Time went on and I ended up making a good group of friends, friends I’m still close with today. It wasn’t till August going into sophomore year that I thought about recruitment again, my roommates and I were talking about just trying it out and if we weren’t happy we would drop. I was so content with where I was not only in school but with my friendships that I thought why would I need to make more friendships? I figured why not branch out a little and see what happens.

We all went into recruitment with an idea of each sorority and where we wanted to be and after the first round a lot of perspectives changed. Immediately after the first round I knew where I fit in, it was a lot different than I thought it would be but my nervousness turned into excitement and I couldn’t wait for the next step. Long story short, I didn’t end up getting my first choice and knew I didn’t want to be somewhere if it wasn’t where I felt I fit in, let alone spend the money on it. More time went by and I was still a little bummed out but I knew I still had friends that were by my side. A friend I had in the sorority I wanted then reached out to me to tell me they were accepting more sisters through a less stressful and simpler process called COB, continuous open bidding. Once again I figured why not, the girls I met during primary recruitment were so kind and easy to talk to. Weeks later I went on a coffee date with one of the sisters and later on was offered a bid. I couldn’t have been more thrilled to meet more people and actually have a role in the sorority, not just be a part of it. The girls I’ve met since then have been the absolute best and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Not only does recruitment give you the opportunity to branch out and make new friendships but it also gives you options to hold leadership positions. Everyone has little interests outside of school whether it be community service, planning or managing events, or even simply just taking photos.

Ever since the start of recruitment I knew I wanted to have a position that helps plan events and make them fun for everyone participating and now I hold the formal chair position in my sorority. I am so excited to help plan a formal that every sister can have an amazing time at and make endless memories. I can fully sit here and tell you that every sorority has positions or events that align with everyone’s interests and it is definitely something to consider.
