8 Holiday Commercials That Make Us Cry

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

Those things that usually make us roll our eyes, that usually make us want to skip right through them. Yes—these are them—commercials.  Sometimes, they are the best things to get us into the holiday spirit!  But sometimes they make us sniffle back a cry coming on because there are other people around (and because they are so cute of course).  Here are some of the top tearjerking holiday commercials…and BRING TISSUES.

Apple has outdone itself with this commercial.  When I first started watching, my first thoughts were about that cousin that we all have who is always on their phone.  I had no idea that it would end up being an absolutely adorable Christmas present from the boy to his family all done from his iPhone. Adorable!

In this commercial, a family decided that they are going other place for Christmas rather than them visiting their father, who is an old (and SUPER CUTE) man living alone.  We watch the old man sitting through Christmas alone, and next thing we know, all of the family is getting notification that their father had just died.  They go to pay him a visit that day, despite their excuses of busy lives, and plot twist of the century and tear jerker moment….. I won’t spoil it for you, but watch watch watch! (And bring some tissues).

Although it is Spanish based and there are no words in it, this commercial definitely made me wipe away a tear or two.  It looks like an animated film but this commercial tells the story of a man is basically the watchman for this mannequin company.  From my understanding, the office seems to be having a “Christmas Lottery” for whom ever is the most festive or fun! Every day, this watchman does something around the office that gives people a laugh or even just a smile; he is very festive but behind closed doors.  In the end, some other worker around the office wins the prize of the Christmas lottery, making the man feel unappreciated and discourages.  Little does he know, the next time he comes into work, he is in for a super pleasant and thoughtful surprise! Go find out!

A child’s imagination is such a powerful thing.  When a little girl playing with a telescope sees that there is an old, lonely man on the moon, she makes it her mission to get him included on the Christmas festivities.  After multiple attempts of her trying to get him to notice her, she finally gets a gift to get to him all the way on the moon (she ties the gift to balloons) and he opens the gift box to find it is a telescope.  With them both looking in their telescopes, he finds her and she finds him, and with them looking at each other and sharing the spirit of Christmas, the lonely old man isn’t so lonely any more.

Not that grandest tear jerker, but this is a commercial that truly shows the sense of community and the Christmas spirit.  It all started with a family’s cat having a nightmare…the consequence to the nightmare was the car ruining the tree, the set table, the presents, and essentially almost burning the house down.  Despite it all being the cat’s fault, the neighbors all came together to help this family still enjoy their Christmas day.

Everyone has that stubborn old neighbor.  In this commercial, a young girl decides to spread the Christmas cheer…even to him! She gathers up her little brothers and they set up a Christmas tree on his front loan with ornament and everything.  It’s so adorable and makes my eyes water every time, you’ll never guess what he does! Go watch!

Taking place on Christmas 1914 during World War I, soldiers from the opposite sides broke out in song.  A soldier escapes from the trench to propose a truce and another soldier from the other side does the same.  Eventually both sides come out of their trenches and exchange a few gifts, laugh, and play games.  They wish each other a merry Christmas and continue on with the war.  I have no clue what happened during that war and the soldiers that were deployed and at combat on Christmas day, but this commercial showed that the Christmas spirit has not enemies and surpasses the hatred of war.  Extremely cute, watch it unfold!

Bringing us back to childhood is as motional as it can get.  A little boy gifts his “pet” penguin the perfect gift; someone to love, and someone to be loved by.  Watch the penguin’s ADORABLE reaction!
