One of my favorite times of the year is the transition from summer to fall. Along with the changing leaves, cooler weather and pumpkin spice everything, I love taking out my fall wardrobe and of course going shopping for more. I’m a sucker for a good deal and love thrifting especially for winter and fall clothing. Through my years of thrifting I think I have become pretty good at finding some pretty great stuff on a budget. Here are my 5 tips for thrifting for fall and winter clothing!

1. Make sure to search in both the men’s and women’s section

When thrifting always make sure to look in both the men’s and women’s section of the store! If I am looking for an oversized t-shirt, sweatshirt, sweater, flannel or turtleneck, the men’s section is where I always look first! Bottom line- whatever section of the store you think you will find clothing that will fit your style and will make you feel confident works!

2. Keep an open mind

It is so important to always keep an open mind while thrifting! Some of my favorite thrift finds have been things that on their own were very basic but were able to be transformed into some of my favorite pieces in my closet. What I mean by this is trying to imagine how you would style pieces you find while thrifting and trying to envision what it would look like if it was cropped or paired with some jewelry and a jacket. Always try to envision how something can be worn or changed to fit your style!

3. Don’t forget about accessories

Never forget about accessories while thrifting! I absolutely love looking through the bag section at thrift stores. You can find some really great purses for amazing prices that can take an outfit to the next level. Just recently while shopping at Savers, I was looking to find a vintage looking shoulder bag. I had recently been seeing so many of these trendy shoulder bags and was dying to find my own for a good price. I was able to find a vintage Kate Spade shoulder bag in the exact style that I was looking for for only six dollars! Moral of the story- always look through the accessories, you never know what you could find!

4. Go in with intention

Going in with an intent of what you need and would like to purchase on a shopping trip will help with not over buying and make the trip more efficient. So many times, I’ve been thrifting and saw something with a name brand on it and put it right in my cart thinking to myself what a steal, I have to buy it, and then never even end up wearing it.  I have found it helpful before thrifting to look on places like Pinterest to find inspiration and figure out exactly what I want to find beforehand. Of course, on the way you are bound to find things you don’t necessarily need or thought you wanted and will throw it in your cart, but it is definitely helpful to know exactly what you want beforehand to prevent over buying!

5. Remember that winter is coming and there are lots of customers relying on finding winter essentials at the store

Thrifting in the fall and winter is lots of fun and can bring lots of great deals but it is always important to remember that it is getting colder and shoppers will be looking for things like winter essentials such as coats, hats, gloves, boots, socks, etc. If you already have a winter coat at home or are able to pick one up at a retail store, then it is always smart to leave items like that for those who really need them. Just be smart and have fun!
