5 things that will make you want to start showering before bed every night

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

I’ve made it a rule that I won’t get into bed at night unless I’ve showered and I think everyone else should too, and here’s why:

1. Getting into bed clean every night will make you feel slightly better about all of the disgusting bacteria, microorganisms, and sheded skin that live in our bed linens and accessories. I won’t get into it because it grosses me out to even talk about it, but if you want some quick facts about this here’s a diagram from a Daily Mail article talking about the things that live in our beds.

2. On the topic of germs, think about every single thing you’ll do on any given day and just picture how many germs you pick up and then carry with. How can you be even REMOTELY ok with getting into bed after that? Sleep = your bed = your friend. Treat your bed with respect, don’t get into it if you’re dirty. Here’s a picture of a bed to inspire you to respect yours more.

3. Taking a hot shower before bed can be one of the best ways to relax before bed. Think about all of the times you’ve gotten into bed after a long day and have had a hard time falling asleep because you weren’t able to shut your brain off. Taking the time to shower can help you decompress before getting into bed. It a custom in Japan for people to bathe every night before bed, but they do it a little differently than you might think. Bathrooms normally have a shower and a tub that are separate from each other. People wash their bodies (and usually their hair, too) in the shower, and then get into the soaking tub as a way to relax. They shower before getting into the bath because they normally share the bath water with their family members. Personally, sharing bath water with anyone is where I draw the line, but I have lots of respect for this tradition.

4. It may inspire you to moisturize more frequently, or to do face and/or hair masks that you normally wouldn’t do before your rushed shower in the morning. I don’t know about the rest of you, but when I take a rushed shower in the morning before work or school, I rarely take the time to put on lotion, which is something that everyone should really do. Since I started showering every night before bed, I’ve also started to moisturize regularly too.

5. And even though our beds are filled with millions of germs, if you shower before bed every night, then you won’t feel like you have to wash your sheets as much as you would if you got into bed dirty every night, and who TF really wants to deal with fitted sheets?
