5 Healthier Halloween Swaps

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

Who can’t help digging into the candy your little sister brings home after trick or treating or the stash your mom sends you in the care package. And you shouldn’t have to. Having a Halloween treat can make you feel like a kid again, and we all need a little bit of that sometimes. But we can’t always be as carefree as we were when we were little and down 20 pieces of candy without feeling guilty about it. Here’s how to indulge in a little Halloween candy the grown up way.

If you’re craving chocolate:
The No-No:
Fun Size Butterfinger Bar
100 Calories, 4 grams of Fat, 10 grams of Sugar

The Grown Up Choice:
Fun Size 3 Musketeers
63 Calories, 2 grams of fat, 10 grams of sugar.

You’ll save on fat and calories!

If you’re craving something fruity:

The No-No:
3 Airheads
140 Calories, 1.5 grams of fat, 19 grams of sugar

The Grown Up Choice:
3 Dum Dum Pops
77 calories, 0 grams of fat, 105 grams of sugar

Although higher in sugar, Dum Dums are the more nutritional choice since Airheads are made with partially hydrogenated oils – the source of trans fat.

If you want a mini treat:

The No-No:
3 Twix Miniatures
150 calories, 7 grams of fat, 15 grams of sugar

The Grown Up Choice:
3 Tootsie Rolls
70 calories, 1.5 grams of fat 9.5 grams of sugar

Twix is very high on saturated fat – choose tootsie rolls instead

If you want something to chew on:

The No-No:
4 Pieces Brach’s Milk Maid Caramels
160 Calories, 4.5 grams of fat, 16 grams of sugar

The Grown Up Choice:
4 Pieces of Now and Laters
53 calories, .5 grams of fat, 10 grams of sugar

Milk Maid Caramels are not even made from milk products. We’re old enough to know better now.

If you’re going for a themed Halloween Treat

The No-No:
One Reese’s Pumpkin
170 calories, 10 grams of fat, 16 grams of sugar

The Grown Up Choice:
Candy Corn – or the regular Reese’s. We’ve grown up; leaving the pumpkin shaped Reese’s shouldn’t be hard for us anymore. Choose from one of these candies and you won’t have to miss out on reliving your childhood Halloween fun.
