Meet Megan Offenhauser

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNF chapter.

Each week for our campus celebrity we, here at the UNF chapter of HerCampus, we try to find strong student role models with interesting stories to tell. This week for our campus celebrity we have chosen Megan Offenhauser.

Megan is 21 years old she is  from Atlanta, Georgia.

HC:Why did you choose to leave Atlanta and come here to UNF?

Megan: I came to UNF because I absolutely love the beach. I also loved that the campus is on a nature reserve and that it is very environmentally friendly.

HC: Whats your major?

Megan: I am a criminal justice major and a psychology minor.

HC: What made you choose criminal justice?

Megan: I chose to do criminal justice because I really want to help people, and carry a gun. I’ve also always really admired law enforcement for everything that they do to protect our society so I think it would be really cool to be part of that.

HC: How long have you been a member of the SCJA?

Megan: I’ve been a member of the criminal justice club for almost three years (member for 1 year, secretary for 1 year, president for 1 year).

HC: What are some of your duties as President of the SCJA ?

Megan: As President of SCJA, I am responsible for assisting the club advisor in setting up our weekly meetings and our prison tours. I act as the chairperson during regular meetings, and I always make myself available for my members to talk to about club ideas they may have. I regularly assist my fellow officers with their duties, such as keeping up with the club email, and ordering and selling our merchandise. One important part about this position is keeping in contact with Club Alliance to make sure we are in the loop with what’s going on around campus.

HC: Out of all the speakers that have come to speak to the SCJA who left the best impression on you?

Megan: Of all the club speakers that we’ve had, the one that left the best impression on me was an undercover agent who had actually worked at UNF and posed as a student who lived in a dorm a few years back. He had such awesome stories to tell and he was a really nice guy. A lot of people are intimidated by police officers who work on cases such as drug busts, but this guy was super down to earth and easy to talk to. He also said there is a huge need for women in the field right now and encouraged me to start applying to different agencies.

HC: Who is your role model?

Megan: I would say that my mom is definitely my role model. She has the answers for everything and always seems to put things into prospective and look at everything so positively.

HC: What is your plan for when you graduate?

Megan: After I graduate I plan on hopefully securing a job with an internship I love, and working while perusing my masters degree in Criminal Justice at UNF. I’ve also considered applying at FSU because they have an amazing criminal justice program, but that would mean I would have to leave the beach. *sad face*

HC: What is your dream job?

Megan: I would say my dream job is either being a prosecutor in animal abuse cases, or being a taste tester for chipotle ;)

HC: Tell us about some cool things SCJA is planning this semester.

Megan: This semester, SCJA is planning a trip to both the Florida State Prison and the Columbus Correction Institution.

What’s one interesting thing about you?

Megan: One interesting thing about me is that my family owns and operates a pet store in Alpharetta, Georgia. I have over 20  rescued pets in my house, ranging from dogs and cats to amazon parrots and ball pythons.

Whats your favorite quote? Or a motto that you live by?

Megan:I try to live every day positively, so one of my favorite quotes as always been “Your mind is a garden, your thoughts are the seeds; you can grow flowers, or you can grow weeds.”

My name is Maya Dartiguenave, and I am a senior at the University of North Florida. I'm a communications major, with a focus in public relations. Reading, writing, anything to do with words is what holds my true interest, which is why I'm so happy to be a part of Her Campus! I'm so excited to have started UNF's chapter of Her Campus! While I claim to be a Florida girl for now, my heart belongs to Philadelphia, always. (Go, Eagles!) I hope to move away from Florida after graduation, work my way through grad school, and begin my career in publishing. The future is definitely going to be an adventure, and I can't wait for it!
