What I Actually Learned After a Semester Abroad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCW chapter.

Senior year. Here I am. I made it fam…barely. I recently returned from a semester abroad in the UK where I had the time of my life, but now it’s back to reality. Although I’ve been back in Wilmington all summer, starting school has been really weird, to say the least. After a semester of traveling, meeting new people, and studying in a new learning environment it’s difficult to transition back into the old routine. Yes, I might be an annoying stereotype with how much I talk about my semester abroad, but it is a struggle being back. Here are some things that I have experienced the past couple weeks of school at UNCW.

1. Freezing in Scotland is better than dying of heat in Wilmington.

I will never understand how I sweat like a man yet other girls walk around like they aren’t walking through the pits of hell. Cold over the disgusting Wilmington heat and humidity any day.

2. Traveling Europe during the weekend is better than working during the weekend.

Let’s be real, anything is better than working during the weekend and traveling Europe is better than almost anything. Now that I’m back and poor I spend most of my free time at work which means weekends are usually no fun for me.

3. Rain in the UK is better than a tropical storm in Wilmington.

Okay, so yeah it’s sunnier here and I enjoy that. But have you seen this rain lately? It will pour out of nowhere while I walk to class. It’s a no from me.

4. Drinking wine in Europe is better than drinking Gen X water in Wilmington.

Enough has been said.

5. Doing little to no school work abroad is better than constantly drowning in class work, papers, and exams.

Yes, I did school work. Yes, I passed all my classes. But, there is significantly less work that has to be done when you take classes abroad. A lot of times, it was just one big exam or project; there was never this constant stress of homework, papers, and exams.

6. Parking on campus is the worst.

I missed my car more than anything when I was abroad, but the parking on campus is awful and stressful. I did not miss it at all.

7. Having a routine again is cool but stressful.

No work, barely any homework, traveling, eating, and living my life, what the heck is a schedule? It was weird to come back to school, work, an internship, and just life in general. I enjoy having a routine but I honestly forgot how tiring it is.

8. You keep trying to think of ways to go back and travel.

I missed Wilmington and I’m happy to be back finishing my last year of school, but the stress is real guys. The pressure is on and all I can think about is going back to Europe. Anybody wanna start a GoFundMe?
