What to Do When You Feel Unmotivated

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCW chapter.

I’ve been feeling the effects of senioritis for a few months now—and the struggle is real. I’m so ready to be done with my classes. Some days, I want to do anything but homework or job searching. When I feel this way, there are a few things I do to get inspired to keep hustling!

Take a 15-minute break every now and then while doing homework.

The best way to be productive is to take short breaks every hour or so. It gives your brain time to recharge without getting too off track. Just be careful not to get caught up scrolling Twitter or Tik Tok and exceed the 15-minute window!

Eat healthy snacks (and avoid too much caffeine).

Caffeinated drinks like coffee and soda help you stay awake, but they can increase anxiety levels. It’s better to eat healthy, protein-filled snacks, like almonds or yogurt with granola and chia seeds.

Make writing in your planner fun!

If you use a planner to keep track of homework and responsibilities, use things like stickers, colorful pens, and washi tape to brighten up the pages. If you use a whiteboard, colorful pens can spruce up even the most mundane lists.

Try meditation or yoga.

If you have a lot on your plate but don’t feel like doing any of it, trying a yoga class will help you center your mind. You’ll leave feeling relaxed, focused, and ready to get things done. If you don’t want to go to a class, there are plenty of meditation apps (like Breathe and Headspace) with short, 5-minute meditations you can try!

Don’t work too hard!

Sure, you’ve got to get your work done. But don’t stress yourself out too much. Give yourself time to have fun—it is your last semester of college, after all!

How do you stay motivated?

Rachel is a senior and Creative Writing major/English minor at UNCW. She loves to write about entertainment and often publishes listicles on her favorite movies, music, and TV. Rachel is probably rereading the Percy Jackson books, watching comedy specials on Netflix, or petting a dog right about now. Sometimes, she's doing all three.
