On Feb. 21, at 6 p.m. Tara Grinna released her newest collection for the spring/summer season. Bright, light and airy, retro-inspired ensembles lined the walls.

The trunk show was a hit complete with gift bags, champagne and a 20 percent off for life VIP card.

This kind of hospitality is how Tara does business. “Tara Grinna Swimwear focuses on finding the perfect fit for every woman while making sure she is more than comfortable while doing so,” Tara says. “Shopping for swimwear should be an experience,” she says.

Being able to custom fit women put Tara on the map in the swimwear world. That, plus selling pieces in separates made her a fashionable swimwear icon.

Designing was a natural talent for Tara. She began making clothes when she was just a girl for her cousins, however it wasn’t until she decided to go to school to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in English that she found designing wasn’t just a hobby.

“It has always been a passion of mine,” Tara says. “And, I believe that if you want something bad enough, you’ll get there.”

Tara proved her point when she left Florida Atlantic University to attend Boulder College of design.

Since Tara’s initial start in 1987, she’s opened a store in Estero, F.L.; Wilmington, N.C.; Charlotte, N.C; Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Conway, S.C.

Creativity runs in the family and was passed on to Tara’s daughter, Kristi. At the age of 14 her first bikini collection was featured in Sports Illustrated, and now she owns her own line titled Kristi Grinna Bikinis (KGB).

The KGB line is edgier and targets a younger, more energetic audience.

“This year I am using all recycled fabrics,” Kristi says. “I am excited about trying the new fabric—it is recycled, but it still has a luxurious feel, and I am excited about bringing it to the swimwear industry.”

All of Kristi’s and Tara’s fabrics are imported from Italy.
