It’s so great to hear about organizations around campus that are standing out for doing something that’s just flat out awesome, which is why we had to talk to the brothers of the fraternity, Pike, about their philanthropy event that’s coming up, “The Fireman’s Challenge.”  Five years ago, the chapter decided they wanted to get more involved in the community and felt passionate about raising money for the Wilmington Fire Department, which is why they came up with this weeklong event.  With the support of other organizations on campus, these men have been able to raise a whopping $30,000 over the past 5 years.

Wanna know how it works?

Here’s the scoop:

Throughout the week of September 21-26, there’s going to be a variety of points-styled competitions, depending on the day, leading up to the big event on the 26th, an obstacle course the men set up that ends with a final leg pulling a fire truck.  Not only do you get to watch hunky athletic guys running through obstacle courses and pulling trucks, you and your friends can make a team and participate, too!  What’s better than some friendly, fun competition that’s raising money for an awesome, local cause?

Can’t make it to the actual “pull” on the 26th?

That’s okay! Here’s the schedule for the week leading up to it:

  • September 21st, 23rd, 24th: Stop by the fraternity’s table on chancellor’s walk and learn more about the event.  There you can donate to the cause, buy some cool shirts, and talk to some awesome guys.
  • September 21st: Participate in an auction and Pick-A-Pike to be on your team for the Pull (muscle matters, ladies!).
  • September 24th: Stop by Moe’s and mention that you’re there for Pike’s philanthropy and 20% of your meal will go toward their cause.
  • September 26th:  Head over to the Oleander Drive Movie Theatre Parking lot at 2 p.m. for the main event!

We were able to talk to Pike’s philanthropy chair, junior Moe Mahamed, about the event and asked him a few questions about what this event means to him:

Moe: During my time as the philanthropy chair for Pike, out of all the events I’ve done this one is by far my favorite. I love the concept of helping out our firemen who risk their lives for the community, and I know all of my brothers feel the same way.  We look forward to the event not only because of its huge turnout, but also because it really brings both the chapter and community together to work toward a great cause.

Can’t participate or make it to the event?

No worries, you can still contribute by donating at Pike’s fundraising website.  Learn more and check out their website!
