How to Savor the Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCW chapter.

If you’re a fall freak like me, you’ve probably been waiting for October all year. Yeah, September is technically “fall” too, but it pales in comparison to the excitement October brings. Now that it’s here, it’s time to truly make the most of this beautiful season before winter rolls in. Here’s five ways to savor the season:

1. Visit a pumpkin patch.

Pumpkin patches are always SO cute and it’s an easy thing to do with a group of friends. These patches also serve as nostalgic reminders of childhood. Nothing beats the excitement of picking out a pumpkin (except maybe picking out a Christmas tree, but that’s for a different article).

2. Carve a pumpkin, even if you’re not good at it.

If you do end up visiting a pumpkin patch, buy a pumpkin and carve the heck out of it. Really give it your all — buy a carving kit, look up kits online, etc. Just do it. It’s just such a fun experience, from gutting the pumpkin to watching your carving come to life. It doesn’t have to be perfect! Plus, this is another easy activity to do with friends, and your pumpkins could make for cute apartment decor if you carve tiny ones! Just please make sure to throw them out before they rot. We’ve all made that mistake.

3. Notice the way the leaves change.

This might sound cheesy, but on a nice day, take a walk and just admire the beauty fall brings to nature. Appreciate the colors of the leaves before they fall off in winter! After all, it only happens once a year. Appreciate the nice weather, too. Fall weather does NOT last long in the south. (Frostbite, here we come!)

4. Try a new fall flavor.

My gal Starbucks is always the go-to during the fall. In addition to their fall drinks, like their classic pumpkin spice latte, Starbucks also serves a variety of fall treats like pumpkin bread and apple loaves. Check out their website to learn more about their new fall goodies.

5. Bake something.

Speaking of goodies, you better believe grocery stores are also in full fall mode. The last time I went to Food Lion, there was an entire table dedicated to pumpkin-flavored things: cookies, coffee, cakes mixes, you name it. Pick up a fall-flavored cake mix and bake something for yourself or your roomies. If you’re too lazy (or lack baking skills), then buy something pre-made and indulge without guilt. Remember: this is the season where summer bodies are forgotten. Oversized sweatshirts can once again hide our shame.

There you have it! There are tons of other ways to make the most of fall, but this is a good start. Now get out there and buy a pumpkin spice latte!
