Daniel Nelson: President of SAND

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCW chapter.

Daniel Nelson, a sophomore at UNCW, is the epitome of a well-rounded college student.  Daniel is double majoring in Communication Studies and Theatre.  He is originally from Hampton, V.A., but currently lives in Goldsboro, N.C. Daniel is an RA in Seahawk Landing and the President of the Seahawk Admission Network for Diversity (SAND).  He is also a member of the Brazilian Jiujutsu Club.

Which role is the most time-consuming?

RA, especially when I’m on duty. I’ve answered pages at 3 a.m.

What is the most rewarding part of what you do?

I’d say that being an RA is the most rewarding. I’m a people person and love meeting and interacting with new people. Being an RA has given me countless opportunities to meet awesome individuals at our campus.

You’re the president of SAND. What is SAND to you and what kind of opportunities do you have as the president?

SAND is an organization sponsored by the UNCW Admissions Office. It gives me the opportunity to meet potential future Seahawks firsthand, and make our school more diverse in every possible way. As president, I get to help work with an awesome team as we strive towards making UNCW an even more amazing school.

What would you say makes a leader, especially as a student?

A leader is a person who is willing, selfless and determined to help a group of people reach the same goal together.

Future goals?

I hope to work in television production or for a marketing or PR firm. I still want to pursue music no matter what.

What are some of your hobbies?

I like to watch Netflix, go to the gym, sing and write music, longboard, play guitar with my band, go to the beach, go to UNCW basketball games, play video games and hang out with friends.

What do you wish you had more time for?

I wish I had more time to record my original music. It’s in my notebook and head. I just need some recordings.

Any advice for readers?

Make time for the things you love to do! It’s so easy to get caught up in responsibilities. Don’t forget you are a person with passions!

Sierra is a Communication Studies major, and finally a senior! In addition to writing for Her Campus, she is the Lifestyles Editor for UNCW's student newspaper, The Seahawk. She is the Social Media Chair for the university's Style and Modeling Company (STYMO). In her free time, you can most likely find her catching a concert at Ziggy's by the Sea in downtown Wilmington.
