Campus Celebs: Shannon Hefferon and Karen Saesee

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCW chapter.

This week, the UNC Wilmington chapter of Her Campus wants to dedicate our Campus Celebrity post to our senior members who are graduating this semester. Shannon Hefferon and Karen Saesee were both members of HC UNCW from the very start. They have both brought so much to this organization and we are very sad to see them go. Both of these girls have loved and cherished their time in Her Campus, and they agree that the magazine has added so much to their college career. Although we are sad to see them go, our chapter is excited to see what the future has in store for them after graduation. Good luck to Shannon, Karen, and their fellow Seahawk graduates! We’ll miss you!

Name: Shannon Hefferon

Age: 22

Year: Senior

Major: Communication Studies

HC: How did you first get involved with Her Campus?

SH: I got an email from my department chair about the up and coming organization and I thought it would be a great opportunity to fine tune my writing skills. It also provided me with the opportunity to be a founding member of a campus organization, so I applied!

HC: What is your favorite thing about HC?

SH: It’s hard to pick just one. I think my favorite thing about HC is that going to weekly meetings doesn’t seem like a chore. I always have fun meeting up with the other members. We laugh and make jokes but get everything done as well. I will miss seeing everyone and goofing off together.

HC: What are your plans after college?

SH: I wish I had set plans! I’m seeking a career in public relations, but as of right now I’m not sure if I want to travel around the world, move to a big city, or live it up at the beach. Either way, I’m hoping to begin a career as soon as possible.

HC: How has HC helped you grow throughout college?

SH: I have publications under my belt, which is huge. I’ve also helped put together and distribute a weekly newsletter, which I can use as an artifact when looking for a job. I’ve had to conduct interviews and write about them, which helped me in my journalism course and capstone course this semester.

HC: What is the most valuable thing you have learned from HC?

SH: You get as much out of something as you put in. Her Campus provided me with skills and experiences but only when I was active and very involved with the organization. If you want to see results in your life, you have to show effort!

HC: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

SH: Where exactly I don’t know, but I hope to have begun a career. Hopefully I will no longer be living with roommates. Also, in five years I hope to have made a few big purchases like a nicer car and maybe even a house if things go well. I hope to at least have traveled out of the country by then as well.

HC: Any last remarks for your fellow HC UNCW members?

SH: I can’t thank my fellow Her Campus members enough for this awesome experience! I couldn’t have imagined being part of a better organization.

HC: How did you first get involved with Her Campus?

KS: I had never heard of Her Campus until I met Kaitlyn (the current Campus Correspondent). I actually met her through my roommate my sophomore year when I transferred here. I decided to join Her Campus to meet new people and to write a little for the magazine.

HC: What is your favorite thing about HC?

KS: My favorite thing about Her Campus is the free, promotional items that nationals sends us and of course the great opportunities to get involved with major magazines like Marie Claire.

HC: What are your plans after college?

KS: My plans after college have nothing do with journalism, but I plan on going back home and applying to nursing schools. I would love to be a pediatric nurse and even travel around the world on mission trips.

HC: How has HC helped you grow throughout college?

KS: As secretary of Her Campus, I have had to be very organized. I was in charge of documenting points for articles, attendance, and event participation. This has helped me be a more responsible student in general during college.

HC: What is the most valuable thing you have learned from HC?

KS: I have learned that a lot of work and time goes into being part of Her Campus. This organization isn’t about just being a member. Her Campus also requires putting your time into writing articles and sharing your work with your friends and on your social media. I give lots of kudos to our president, Kaitlyn, for all the great work she has done!

HC: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

KS: In five years, I see myself working at a hospital with children or in a pediatrics doctor’s office as a nurse.
