Friendships: The Most Important Relationships

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCG chapter.

To me one of the most important relationships is a friendship. A friendship is the basis for every romantic relationship you will have and good friendships turn friends into family. Having a great friendship is one of the best feelings ever. But sometimes friendships go bad, for many different reasons, and you have to let go. I recently had an experience with a friendship that went wrong. Even though it was a good relationship t0 begin with, it was important to face the truth. I had to stop holding on to the past.

Losing a friend is always hard, especially when you thought your relationship with that person would never end. At first it was hard for me to come to the realization that my so-called friend wasn’t truly a friend to me, but once I realized it I had to let him go. There are many signs that a friendship isn’t worth keeping, a few of them are: they disrespect you and think it’s okay, they put others way before you, they neglect you, or they use you and don’t reciprocate what you’re putting in. And even when these things are happening you may ignore the signs thinking it will get better, but I promise you don’t deserve to be treated that way.

You may think that some people are in your life forever, but sometimes that’s just not the case. Relationships have their ups and downs, but they should never stay down for too long. A good and strong friendship is a great thing to share with somebody, and when it’s genuinely true it feels so good, but a toxic relationship does nothing but hurt as time goes on. You may sometimes feel as though you can go back and fix things but everything that’s broken can’t be fixed. This does not mean that you should not put effort into your platonic relationships just as you do a romantic one. People make mistakes, are irritable at times and will not always agree with you, but you started that friendship for a reason. With that in mind make sure you do all that you can to keep your relationships strong, but don’t forget to keep an eye out for the signs that it is time to let go.
