A Day In College as told by Ron Swanson

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCG chapter.

Life has its ups and downs. Some days you just can’t help but be grumpy and somedays you just can’t wipe the smile off of your face. No matter how your day is going, Parks and Recreation’s Ron Swanson knows how to react.

First, we wake up and realize it’s time for another great day. Time to get up, get ready, and make our way to our first obligation. (a.k.a. time to convince ourselves that we can’t skip that class again or that we will get fired if we show up late to work one more time) This may not be the best part of the day for some, and for others it’s definitely the hardest. Just thinking about all the possible annoyances can be enough to make anyone a grump.

Next it’s time for breakfast, which as we all know is a Parks and Rec must-have. Whether you are trying to distract someone with waffles or just trying to start your day off right, this is definitely a step that Ron would not approve of skipping. I personally prefer a hot bagel or a bowl of cereal, but to each his (or her) own.

Now it’s time to get to work which means interacting with other human beings. Now, not all humans are terrible! But students who haven’t yet learned how to walk on the correct side of the sidewalk may just come across your path, and try to push you into oncoming traffic. Have no fear, that’s nothing a well placed scowl can’t handle.

Who knows, maybe everyone will be pleasant and the day will be great, in which case we channel our inner happy Ron. This is a rare sight, but one we love to see. Most often brought on by large amounts of steak, happy Ron never fails to entertain.

When everything finally gets done it is time for some good food. Our day has probably been full of listening to unsolicited personal stories, criticizing the government, handing out advice, silent scowls, and giddy laughter. And now all we want is something yummy to finish it all off so we grab the ice cream out of the freezer or place a pizza order. Either way it’s probably not healthy.

We all have a little bit of Ron Swanson in us just waiting to emerge. He tells it how it is, has lots to complain about, and above all else gives his all to those he loves. There’s no shame in being a little grumpy every now and then.

I am currently a student at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I am double-majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources and Women's and Gender Studies. I love my university and the diversity on campus is important to me.
