7 Spooky Movies for the Week Before Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCG chapter.

With Halloween just around the corner, it’s time for scary movies, and some that might not be so scary, but still get you in the spirit (no pun intended, but fully embraced). Below are seven spooky movies for the last week before Halloween. While some of these are pretty obscure, they are all worth a watch.

1. ParanNorman (2012, PG) – A cute movie by Studio Laika about a boy who can see ghosts and has to find a way to break the curse on his town before the dead rise and wreak havoc. Available on DVD at the Jackson Library and Amazon or by streaming on Prime Video.

2. Corpse Bride (2005, PG) – Quickly becoming a Tim Burton classic, a young man accidentally weds a woman killed by her betrothed and has to find a way back to the land of the living to be with the woman he loves, all while helping the corpse bride find peace. Available on DVD at the Jackson Library (but checked out until Saturday the 27th) or Amazon or by streaming on Prime Video.

3. The Loved Ones (2009, R) – An Australian teen is kidnapped and tortured by a girl from his high school and her family. The teen must escape before he becomes like the boys who came before him. Trigger warnings for self-harm, animal cruelty and implied incestuous themes. Available on DVD at the Jackson Library or Amazon or by streaming on Prime Video.

4. American Mary (2012, R) – A promising medical student gets into the world of body modification surgery to help pay her bills, with some grisly practice on the side. Trigger warnings for rape and body horror. Available on DVD on Amazon or streaming on Prime Video.

5. Zoombies (2016, TV-14) – An animal zombie virus breaks out at a zoo and spreads rapidly endangering all of the animals and humans left in the park. Available on DVD at the Greensboro Public Library or Amazon or by streaming on Prime Video.

6. Scarecrow (2002, R) – A high school student possesses a local scarecrow in order to seek revenge on those who wronged him. In his attempts at revenge, viewers experience some sweet acrobatics and great puns. Available on DVD on Amazon, but you have to look hard.

7. Hush (2016, R) – A woman must fight for her life against a man trying to get into her house, armed with one less sense—hearing— and luckily a lot of wits. Available on Netflix.

Time to grab the popcorn and settle in for a spooky movie marathon my friends!
