Hot Cocoa To Warm Yourself Up This Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UMKC chapter.

Okay, let’s face it, we are stuck in Antarctica––forever. The groundhog saw his shadow but that was obviously incorrect because we just had 6 inches of fresh snow dumped on us. So while it seems that winter will never end here in Kansas City, we might as well enjoy the perks of the bitter cold, one of which is hot cocoa! A nice warm cup of this hot cocoa is proven to brighten any dark and dreary winter day. A DIY hot cocoa recipe will keep you cozy and happy while trapped inside.

It’s Cold Outside Hot Cocoa Ingredients

2 cups of milk (I really love to use vanilla almond milk)

1 cup of Chocolate or Chocolate Chips

4 tablespoons of sugar (or more if you please)

2 tablespoons of butter

Here is the real twist…

2 teaspoons of cornstarch!

Steps

  1. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over low heat.

  2. Whisk in the cornstarch. This makes the hot cocoa thick and despite what you might think, it leaves no odd taste at all!

  3. Add in the milk and sugar. Increase the heat and bring to a boil. The hot cocoa should start to thicken.

  4. Once thick, stir in the chocolate until melted.

  5. Top with marshmallows, whipped cream, peppermint sticks, or anything else you please!

  6. Enjoy!

There you have it folks, the best hot cocoa out there for these cold winter days. Throw out those powder packets of cocoa and stay warm Kansas City. Summer will be here soon, we hope!

She is always smiling with a kombucha in her hand & blasting her multiple Céline Dion CD's in her car because duh, the radio can't beat Céline Dion. On any given day she will gladly talk your ear off about Grey's Anatomy, stronger background checks for gun purchases and why immigrants are some of the most important members of our society.
