Astrology 101: Beginners Guide

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UMKC chapter.

By now I’m sure everyone is familiar with astrology, or at the very least you’ve heard the term. Maybe you even know your zodiac sign, which would be your sun sign. But wait, there’s more; there are quite a few different signs as well. On top of that, there are houses, transits, retrogrades, etc. I know this can all sound like a load of bull or a foreign language. Understanding the basics will allow you to easier learn more about the world astrology. Here’s all the astrology tea you may need, sis.

Know the Signs

In astrology, there are 12 zodiac signs: Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Capricorn. Your birth date determines what zodiac signs you are. Furthermore, three signs fall into a specific element. Leo, Aries, and Sagittarius are all fire signs. The water faction is comprised of, Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio. Air signs are Libra, Gemini and Aquarius. Lastly, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn make up all the earth signs.

Know the Chart

Once you’ve become familiar with the basics, expand your horizons and venture into natal charts and what they mean. Natal charts, otherwise known as birth charts, are diagrams of sorts displaying an individual’s various placements. Now, this is where the water can get a bit murky, so try your best to stay with me. I want to note, I will only be explaining a few of the main chart placements and planets, though there are many more. First, and arguably the most important, your sun sign. Your Sun sign represents your entire being, how you identify, what you dislike, what you like, your ego, etc. Following the Sun sign is the Moon sign. The Moon represents your thoughts, feelings, emotions, intuitions and habits. Next is Mercury, this controls how you communicate, learn and problem solve. Venus rules love and romantic relationships. More specifically, how you show affection, how and who you attract, how and who you are attracted to. Next is Mars, which rules your discipline, anger, aggression, impulsiveness, courage, passion and desires. Concluding this section is your Rising or Ascendant sign. This sign is best described as the mask we wear to others. How you come off to others and the first impressions you make, these are ruled by your Rising sign.

Beginner Friendly Resources

All of this has surely been a lot to take in and absorb. Luckily, we are in the age of technology so all you have to do is a few google searches to fully understand all this nonsense I’ve thrown at you. There are two main resources I recommend as they are very easy to navigate and understand. The first website is, cafeastrology.com. Here, you can calculate your own birth chart by simply entering in all the information they ask of you. A chart will then be displayed showing you all your placements and planet signs. You can navigate through the website’s menu to pages that explain what each placement and planet sign means. The next is an app called, Co-star. This app allows you to do the same, by entering the required information. Not only that, but you can add your friends and see how your charts are compatible. This app also gives a thorough explanation of each of your placements and planets. Additionally, users receive daily horoscopes that apply to different areas of your chart.

This article by no means is intended to forcibly push these practices or beliefs on anyone. Some may find astrology to be ridiculous, and that’s okay. Exploring the realm of astrology could lead you to find something that intrigues you because it is accurate, help you to better understand those around you or at the very least, provide entertainment to pass time.
