Why every 20-year-old should go abroad at least once

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UK chapter.

Going abroad is an incredible opportunity that I think everyone should experience at least once in their life, but especially in their 20’s. The lessons and life experiences you gain from going abroad are just unlike anything you can get elsewhere. Seeing and living in a culture different from your own gives you an entirely new perspective on life and really makes you reflect on yourself.

After I studied abroad in London over the summer, I began to notice how much I appreciate where I come from and the parts of my hometown that make it so unique. Being so far from home and far from my family gave me a newfound appreciation for my own life.

I also learned how to be a lot more independent and self sufficient while I was abroad, which is something I have taken with me into my life ever since. I had to learn how to navigate a different country completely by myself, which caused me to venture out on my own a lot.

In my opinion, this is something everyone should experience, but especially in your 20’s. Your 20’s are a time for exploration and discovery, and there is no better way to do this than to go abroad.

Later in life you will be more focused on your career, you may be married or have children, but right now you are the most independent you may ever be! What a perfect time to go abroad:)
