What to Expect When You’re Going Out (…to Two Keys Tavern)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UK chapter.

Two Keys Tavern is the place to be for almost any student in Lexington (provided you’re 21 or older). Not to mention, a Thursday night at Two Keys is great if you’re a broke college student like myself; it’s both fun and economically sound. On Thursday nights, after paying your 10-dollar cover at the door, you can walk right up to the bar with your punch card and treat yourself to a wide selection of drinks (from beer to vodka and everything in-between) for the rest of the night, all without paying another dime. Yes, you read that right. Now all of those Instagram posts make sense, right? But, while you’re here, you’ll encounter a lot of things on a “normal” Thursday night at Two Keys…

First things first, when you walk in the back door of Two Keys, you’ll see (or rather smell) Goodfella’s ah-mazing pizza. If you’re not craving it when you get there, you’ll definitely want to grab a slice before you head home. You won’t regret it, and who knows? Maybe you’ll become a regular customer! Whatever you do: don’t skip out on the pizza.

Once you’re inside, you may also notice some of the students carrying around giant fish bowls filled to the brim with a blue liquid, and topped off with lots and lots of straws. Fear not, this is totally normal. In fact, I encourage you to buy your own! It’s on the Two Keys bucket list, and will do wonders for your immediate future. However, I’m not responsible for how you’ll feel in the morning.

As the night goes on, Two Keys will get more and more packed, and chances are, you’re going to run into someone you know. You may not even know them very well; maybe you both have the same major or you had that one class together freshman year or he’s the guy you’ve had your eye on for the whole semester. Whatever the case, Two Keys offers a laid-back, fun atmosphere where you’ll feel comfortable approaching and talking to anyone. Maybe, you’ll even make a new friend! Everyone is here to relieve some stress from classes and college, in general, so don’t worry about coming off as creepy or weird. Enjoy yourself and the company of those around you!

As you enjoy the company of the colorful variety of people you’re drinking and talking with, you’ll also be listening to live music. The music of the cover band playing in the background is one of my favorite parts about coming to Two Keys. It adds to the stress-free atmosphere, and besides. Who doesn’t love live music?!

As the drinks dwindle and spirits get higher, you may hear people talking about going to Red Bang Bang (no, it’s not something out of 50 Shades of Grey). Don’t worry; this is a totally normal conversation to be having at 2:30 a.m. in downtown Lexington. Red Bang Bang offers up dollar-scoop Chinese food. So, you can get a whole plateful of deicious food for $4. Hop on the Red Bang Bang train before you head back to your apartment. I promise: you won’t regret it.

Now that you know what to expect on Thursday nights at Two Keys, make sure to cross this off your list this semester!

I'm a senior at the University of Kentucky working towards a degree in Media Arts and Studies. Some notable accomplishments of mine: once mailed a stranger a bag of Fruity Pebbles, met Jack White, slayed Bohemian Rhapsody at karaoke night, and once came one number away from winning $50 in a game of BINGO. I also really like Beyoncé because I'm human.
"Sam I am," and I LOVE to read. Whether it's Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" or The Mortal Instruments series, I'm always reading. And when I'm not reading, I'm writing; English papers, magazine editorials, you name it! Italian food is my favorite, shoe shopping is my addiction, and I hate cold weather. I'm also a proud member of Slytherin house (we're not all bad, I swear).
