Spooky Stories: Books to Read During Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UK chapter.

Some people like to watch movies to get in the Halloween spirit, but a good book can work to. I am not someone who enjoys being scared, but I do enjoy a good murder mystery.

Even the occasional scary novel I can handle. Below I have listed 21 books that I feel are great reads to get you scared just enough.

  • Dark Place Gillian Flynn
  • Think of a Number– John Verdon
  • Twisted Prey– John Sandford
  • There’s Someone Inside Your House– Stephanie Perkins
  • All the Missing Girls– Megan Miranda
  • Contagion– Erin Bowman
  • Cheerleaders– Kara Thomas
  • The Good Daughter– Karin Slaughter
  • Pretty Girls– Karin Slaughter
  • The Last Time I Lied– Riley Sager
  • One of us Lying– Karen McManus
  • Fashion Victim– Amina Akhtar
  • Thirteen– Steve Cavanagh
  • Cross Her Heart– Sarah Pinborough
  • Broken Things– Lauren Oliver
  • Sadie Courtney Summers
  • Into the Water Paula Hawkins
  • What She Knew– Gilly MacMillan
  • Watch me Disappear– Janelle Brown
  • Misery– Stephen King
  • IT Stephen King

The majority of these books are not what you would consider scary, but they will give you chills. They have some great plot twists and some of them feature some grisly and gruesome scenes.

Also Stephen King is like the father of Halloween so you have to read at least one of his books this month.

My name is Micah Hurt. I am a sophomore Equine major at the University of Kentucky. I am also a Resident Advisor (RA). I love to read, explore Lexington (or anywhere really), and listen to murder mystery podcast!
