Kentucky Derby Outfit Guide

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UK chapter.

There are only a few weeks left until the Kentucky Derby and I am sure a lot of you still have not figured out what to wear — procrastination gets the best of us.

So, if you are doing some last-minute shopping and need some inspiration, HC is here to help!

Pick One: Clothing

Fancy Romper

If it is hot out, rompers are the way to go. They are shorts and they can be flowy, cooling you own if you have to stand in the hot sun. Plus, rompers can look really fancy, especially when you dress them up with accessories.

Bright Dress

Obviously, most people wear dresses to the derby, but sometimes it is hard narrowing it down when shopping. To speed it up a bit, just look for bright ones. Spring colors are perfect for the derby, and you will not get lost in a crowd!

Jumpsuit

Jumpsuits are becoming increasingly popular and there are a ton of styles to choose from like denim, flowy and probably the trendiest right now, striped.

Pick One: Shoes

Wedge Sandals

Spring is the best season to wear wedges, and almost every girl feels better with a little height. Wedge sandals are the perfect combination of heels and sandals that are not too

painful to walk in.

Flats

If you want something a little more comfortable, opt for flats. Neutral leather ones will not take away from your cute dress. Plus, you can focus more on the races and less on needing

a foot massage at the end of the day.

Rain Boots

Keep an eye on the weather forecast a few days before the derby. If it rains, you can ensure that mud will be up to your knees the day of. So, keep a pair of rainboots handy in case you need to make some last-minute outfit changes.

Pick One: Headwear

Probably the most important, the most common, and sometimes the most crazy at the derby. There are a ton of styles, colors and fabrics to choose from, but here are three popular options:

Fascinators

Fascinators are very elegant headpieces similar to a headband, but with added fabric tool and roses or flowers.

Floppy Hats

Floppy hats are more bohemian in style, and are typically neutral in color. They also help block the sun.

Cloche Hats

These are also elegant, but more old-fashioned. They can be spiced up with the addition of bows or ribbons.

Pick Two (recommended): Accessories

Belt

This accessory would be a cute addition to any outfit, especially rompers to spice them up a bit! Wear a neutral belt with a bold outfit or a bright-colored belt with a neutral outfit.

Purse/Clutch

You will need a place to keep your money for all that horse-betting! So, make sure you have a cute purse to match your outfit. Use a crossbody bag for convenience, but a clutch if you want to look more fancy.

Jewelry

If you have on a very nice outfit with other accessories, you do not want to go overboard with the jewelry. But, a few bracelets or a pearl necklace can add the final touches to a derby-ready outfit!

I hope you enjoyed this simple guide of what to wear to the Kentucky Derby.

Think of these steps more as ideas and inspiration and opposed to a set look, because the derby is one place where you can get most creative with your outfit. I bet, across the board, your outfit will be a winner!
