It is super hard to wake up for 8 a.m classes, especially after staying up until 2 a.m writing a paper the night before. Maybe you are a morning person or maybe you are not, but these tips will definitely help you start your morning on a happy note, getting you excited to tackle the rest of the day.

1. Get a good night’s sleep

This may seem obvious, but if possible, get at least 8 hours of sleep. This will make it a lot easier to wake up in the morning. As Benjamin Franklin accurately said, “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”

2. Plan the night before

Being a morning person has a lot to do with how you plan the night before. Get your books, your backpack and even your outfit ready ahead of time so you have less to do in the morning.

3. Make sure all work is done

Similar to the previous tip, making sure that all your homework is done ensures that you won’t be stressed waking up in the morning and you can sleep in as much as possible.

4. Wake up to your favorite song

Everybody dreads the classic alarm sound, so setting your favorite song to wake you up in the morning will be a lot less annoying. You will always look forward to hearing it first thing in the morning.

5. Open your blinds

Let some sunlight into your room when you wake up. If you wake up early enough, you may even be able to see the sunrise. I know it may be hard for your eyes to adjust at first, but it will definitely start your day on a good note.

6. Make your bed

Get into the habit of making your bed as soon as you wake up. This way, there is no temptation to get back into it. Plus, it instantly makes your room 10x neater, which already makes you feel productive.

7. Make a cup of coffee/tea

If you are someone that needs caffeine to get you through the day, make a cup as soon as you get up! A lot of people look forward to their morning coffee, and trying out new flavors based on the season can actually be fun.

8. Relax

You may not be a morning person because you always feel stressed and rushed. But, taking at least 5 minutes every morning to relax can really turn that cranky morning mood around. Spending time on yourself is a great way to prepare for the long day ahead.

9. Exercise/Yoga

If you have time, go for a morning run or do some yoga. Even just stretching will loosen your muscles get your adrenaline pumping, making the rest of the morning a lot less painful (literally and mentally).

10. Shower

If you don’t already shower in the morning, this step can really help improve your mood. It is a great way to wake your body up and feels super refreshing in the morning.

11. Listen to music

Once it’s time to get ready, blast your favorite songs. It will put you in a good mood, which is something many non-morning people lack. Get excited to take on any tasks for the day.

12. Eat breakfast

I know it is hard to eat breakfast in college, but it is the most important meal of the day. Make a smoothie or something else that you can take on the go with you. Now you are ready for class and will have enough energy to get you through the rest of the morning!

Doing all of these things for the first time may not be the best or easiest way to become a morning person. But, slowly integrating them into your daily habits can greatly improve your feelings towards waking up before the sun does. Actually getting up early is half the battle, the rest is just making sure the remainder of the morning goes smoothly and is as enjoyable as possible.
