A Guide to Making Homemade Beauty Products

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UK chapter.

A cheap, easy way to give your skin the refresh it might need during this time of year — face masks and other beauty DIYs are easy as pie. These recipes come from the book “Homemade Beauty” by Annie Strole, which includes 150 simple beauty recipes made from all-natural ingredients.

Why would you need to purchase beauty treatments after finding these recipes, am I right? All of these products are hassle-free and can be mixed up with common ingredients you probably have available at home!

  • Acne Scar Eraser

1 teaspoon of nutmeg

1 tablespoon of honey

Honey and nutmeg are antifungal and anti-inflammatory so they heal scars fast. All you have to do is combine the ingredients and apply to affected area. Let it sit for at least thirty minutes and afterwards rinse!

  • Dry Shampoo

½ cup of arrowroot powder or cornstarch

10 drops of an essential oil of your choice

Using dry shampoo on the regular can get a bit pricey (if you are anything like me and ADORE dry shampoo, then you would know) so here is a wallet-friendly option. Just add the ingredients together in a small bowl and stir until oil is dissipated. Use a funnel to pour the dry shampoo into an old salt shater. Just sprinkle it on to your scalp and rub it in for the best results. If you’re brunette and the dry shampoo will not blend into your scalp, use ¼ cup of arrowroot powder or cornstarch and ¼ cup of cocoa powder.

  • Avocado-Honey Revitalizing Hair Treatment

1 avocado, cubed

1 tablespoon of honey

½ tablespoon unrefined virgin coconut oil

½ tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

Great for dry or brittle hair! Mash the avocado, then stir in the rest of the ingredients until the mixture is smooth. Apply all over hair and scalp, making sure to coat the ends as well. You could even use a plastic wrap for the best results. Let it sit for 30 minutes and rise it all out. Follow with shampoo and conditioner.

  • Brown Sugar-Vanilla Body Scrub

2 cups of brown sugar

½ cup of extra-virgin olive oil

½ cup of honey

1 tablespoon of vanilla extract

Gets rid of the dead skin cells and also hydrates the skin, giving your skin a beautiful glow. Mix the ingredients together and scrub away.

I hope you guys are excited as I am about the simplicity and ease of these fun recipes for homemade beauty treatments. Check out Strole’s book “Homemade Beauty” for more.

Enjoy!
