Grammys 2021: Highlights of the Night

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UK chapter.

The 63rd Annual Grammy Awards took place in and around the Los Angeles Convention Center, in Los Angeles on Sunday night. The Grammys were originally scheduled to take place back in January but were postponed six weeks due to concerns about the spread of the coronavirus. Hosted by The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah, the Grammys felt like the closest thing to a “normal” award show we have seen since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are some of the biggest moments from the night:

Harry Styles opened the show

With his first ever Grammys performance, Harry Styles opened the show with a performance of his hit song, Watermelon Sugar. Styles also took home his first Grammy, winning Best Pop Performance for Watermelon Sugar.

Beyoncé made history

Beyoncé won four Grammy awards on Sunday night, Best R&B Performance, Best Rap Song, Best Music Video, and Best Rap Performance. These wins bring her lifetime total to 28. She now holds the record for the most Grammy wins by any female artist. Her daughter, Blue Ivy also took home her first Grammy award, making her the second youngest Grammy winner in history.

Women won all of the big four categories

This year all of the big four awards (Record, Album and Song of the Year and Best New Artist). Billie Eilish won Record of the Year for Everything I Wanted. Last year, Eilish took home all of the big four Grammys. Taylor Swift took home Album of the Year for folklore, her first Grammy win since 2016. H.E.R. won Song of the Year for I Can’t Breathe, a song honoring George Floyd. Megan Thee Stallion won Best New Artist. She is the first female rapper to take home this award since Laryn Hill won in 1999.
