Ever wonder if there is a guide to “roommating” just roaming around the earth to help you through the trials and tribulations of being a roommate? Well have no fear The Roommate Book: Sharing Lives and Slapping Fives is here to save the day! Becky Murphy Simpson gives the reader some not so serious advice on what to expect and how to handle life living with another person (who might of been a friend before, or a random stranger Reslife paired you with.) A fun, and exciting guidebook to being the best roommate you can.

My freshmen year I got paired up with a girl who ended up becoming one of my best friends. We were complete strangers, and now everybody refers to us as Hook and Smee. At the beginning, it was a tough transition from leaving home to going to a strange city and sharing a room with a person I barely knew. My mother was worried I wasn’t going to make any friends, that I was going to hate it in Lexington. But if luck had it, I ended up super close with my roommate. We also made friends with our neighbors, or “outlet buddies” (Kirwan Tower, yes one of the big empty towers on south campus use to be home to students a few years ago, had thin walls. “If the outlets could talk” was not just a saying. That’s how we communicated.)

Now we didn’t have the handy dandy The Roommate Book to help us figure out what to do when we were all hauled up in our rooms bored out of our minds on a Saturday afternoon. Simpson didn’t just write a book filled with solid advice, she added comical pie charts, hypotheticals, and illustrations to get you through the rest of the semester/years at UK.

Surviving the coursework is just a tiny part of the equation. Without good friends, who might of started out as your strange roommate and neighbors but turned out to be family, by your side the year seems to drag by. Don’t forget to pick up a copy of The Roommate Book: Sharing Lives and Slapping Fives
