Vincent van Gogh: 3 Paintings You Wish You Could Wander Through

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

Like many other artists, Vincent van Gogh’s fame took off after his death. Van Gogh lived a troubled life, yet he was able to produce captivating artwork that is loved and praised to this day. Many of his pieces display landscapes that would provide a dream-like backdrop for a leisurely stroll. Here are three of my favorites:

1. The Starry Night

This oil painting is mesmerizing, and the swirls of the sky add a very calming element to it. It may seem hard to believe, but Van Gogh’s inspiration for it was the view from his room at a mental institution he was a patient in. After learning that, the heavy use of blue tones suggests that this beautiful scene has an underlying sadness.

2. Café Terrace at Night

This piece is so powerful, in the sense, that it creates an urge within you to want to creep closer to the glowing light of the café. It is as if you are standing there in Van Gogh’s shoes, and you can almost feel the cobblestones under your feet, with the glow of the moon guiding you. The blue star-filled sky ties it all together.

3. Road with Cypress and Star

The depiction of the sky in this piece is enchanting, and the path portrays a pleasant journey guided by the moonlight.
