Tips for Establishing an Effective Nighttime Routine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

After any long day, having a consistent nighttime routine is a great way to help you unwind and be well rested to begin your morning the next day. Your routine could take you ten minutes or thirty, but either way, you should find one that works for you and helps you destress at the end of the day. Use some of these helpful tips below, in no particular order, to help you create an effective nighttime routine that is most beneficial to you.

Put Down the Electronics:

Set whatever alarms you may need, send that last text, and put down your phone and other electronics. Don’t let the infamous never ending scroll keep you up at night. The first step to start your nighttime routine is to put down these distractions.

Bathroom Routine:

Take some time before you go to bed to do some skincare and brush your teeth. Though they may seem to be trivial tasks, they are things you’d probably already be doing and now you can say it’s a part of your routine.

Read:

You may have to read a lot of textbooks for class, but finding a book of your own that you actually enjoy reading can be a fun way to chill out at the end of the night. Reading a few pages or chapters of a book at night can be a good way to unwind and stay off your phone before going to sleep. Whether you prefer to read self-help, mystery, or romance novels, pick your favorite and unwind with a good page-turner. Check out this article for some great book recommendations.

Listen to Calm Music:

Check out some calm music playlists on any app you listen to music on or try making one of your own playlists. Personally, I can’t fall asleep without listening to some relaxing music that calms me down and releases any stress that I may have had from my day. You can listen to music right before going to bed or even throughout the rest of your nighttime routine.

At the end of the day, it’s good to put some time aside to focus on yourself and your own well-being. Getting a good night’s sleep is crucial to give you the energy you need for the next day. So don’t forget about the importance of an effective nighttime routine and try some of these tips or add them to your own nighttime routine if you want.
