New Year New Me: 2017 Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

Who else is happy that 2017 is finally here? I know I am, since we all know 2016 was a train wreck that we’d rather forget. I’m praying 2017 is a great year because it can’t get any worse. I swear this article isn’t that basic, despite the title. We all made New Years resolutions, but how many of those are we actually going to do? I didn’t make resolutions exactly, but more of a motto for me to live by this year. A motto is a bit easier to live by than completing resolutions.

Everyone says “new year new me,” which is not my motto. I asked myself what I wanted to get out of in 2017. I knew that this year was going to be filled with many goodbyes, but also new beginnings. This spring semester for some of us is our last whether it’s graduating or in my case leaving for nursing school. Life is about taking chances and trying new things, yet I realized that most of my college career I stayed in my comfort zone. I’m not a person that welcomes change, since once I get used to things I like it to stay that way.  The motto I decided to go by was to “live life to the fullest.”

Living life to the fullest meant that I would take chances. I would try new things, even if it meant stepping out of my comfort zone. The first week back at school I followed living by my motto and it was eye opening. I spent more time with people that I normally don’t. I went out to new places with friends, instead of having a movie night. I stepped out of my comfort zone for the first time and I was happy. I used to think that if I stepped out of my comfort zone that I would regret it. I tried predicting the possible outcomes, which kept me in my comfort zone. I stopped overthinking things for once.

Life is too short to not take chances. It doesn’t matter if you made resolutions or a motto like me for this year. Make this year about what you want to get out of this year. If the resolutions you made are what you want, then go out and actually do them. Be the person you want to be this year. Step out of your comfort zone and see what’s out there. You might be surprised at what happens when you do. Don’t do anything crazy or illegal, of course. Challenge yourself this year because you might end up liking the results.
