There are condoms, the pill, IUD, and the nuvaring, but have you ever heard of the vaginal contraceptive film? This form of birth control is a semi-transparent paper-thin film. It contains spermicide which dissolves into a gel coating and is placed in the vagina near the cervix.

After placement of the film, one must wait at least 15 minutes for it to dissolve and become effective for a period of three hours. In most drug stores it is available over the counter without a prescription. An upside to this contraceptive is that since it dissolves into a gel it doesn’t become runny or messy. After intercourse removal isn’t necessary, as the gel washes away with natural body fluids.

How effective is this contraceptive? The film is 94% effective and is even more effective when used in conjunction with another form of birth control. Another upside to the film is that it’s very discreet. At an approximately 2×2 inches the squared shaped film can be stored just about anywhere and taken out at your convenience. Other than the unusual irritation or burning of the vagina or penis there are no other side effects reported.

Please note: This vaginal contraceptive film does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases.
