Golden Goose: Would You Pay $500 For a Pair of Sneakers?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

Even though I can’t afford them, I love browsing through clothing sites like Intermix and Revolve. The thing that stands out the most to me though are a brand of sneakers called “Golden Goose.” The sneakers cost around $500! The sneakers are known for their “distressed” and “worn out” look. In fact, a few months ago, they sparked a controversy when a pair the brand released was accused of mocking poverty.

But, I started wondering, why do these sneakers, that look extremely used, cost so much money? While I can’t afford to spend that much money, I decided to read on some of the reviews and figure out the hype around these sneakers.

1. Each pair is unique- no one will have the same shoes because each shoe is handmade!

2. They’re made of leather.

3. They’re already dirty- so you don’t have to worry about making them dirty yourself.

4. Iffy sizing- a huge negative I found across several reviews is that the shoes don’t necessarily run true to size. Additionally, since the shoes are mostly sold through online retailers, you can’t actually try the shoes on before you buy them.

5. They’re stiff- several buyers complained that the shoes are extremely stiff the first few times you wear them. They have something similar to a raised insole which may contribute to the narrow feeling of the shoe. So, they might not be great for people with wider feet.

Would you spend hundreds of dollars on shoes? Personally, I didn’t find enough positive reviews to convince me.
