Full-Time Student, Part-Time Employee, Full-Time Human

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

Do you ever feel like all your responsibilities are too much for you? You might be thinking who doesn’t, but a lot more people are better at balancing school, work, love life, and social life. I, however, become stressed out thinking about the things I have to do, so here’s what I do to try and keep myself balanced.

I take 14-16 credit hours like everyone else. College professors will tell you for every one credit hour of in-class time, you should study or do homework double or triple that time. If you’re taking 14-16 credit hours, that means you’re recommended to study 28-48 hours a week. That’s crazy, right? Still, there are ways to keep yourself from stressing. Focus on one assignment at a time, and find an environment that fits you. I personally prefer listening to music or listening to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in the background, but if you’re not that kind of person, that’s okay. Don’t be afraid to know what’s good for you.

On top of school, I work 16-20 hours at a café in the South Loop of Chicago called Café Press. Sometimes we get tremendously busy, and other times we do not. I am lucky enough to have bosses that allow me to do homework while I am at work. Here’s some advice: don’t overwork yourself! Although it’s nice to have your own hard-earned cash and not ask your parents for money, it’s even nicer not feeling overwhelmed with your schedule. If something is not working out with your schedule, talk to your managers and they may be more than happy to accommodate you because school comes first. If not, maybe a job at the moment isn’t a good idea, opt out to find a job next semester.

Finally, a love and social life is very important for the mind, body, and soul. Find time for your friends and your SO. Life is too short to miss out on things. I think to myself “would I regret not having fun in my college years by just staying in and studying?” Of course you will! College is about having fun, experiencing new things, and meeting new people. Don’t live your life full of regret, instead go out and enjoy the world. I’m not saying to forget all your responsibilities because that isn’t healthy either, but live a little. Hanging out with the people you love is just as important. With that said, keep your goals in mind, but also, don’t be afraid to be human.
