5 Things That Happen When A Woman Likes Hip Hop

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

As a majority of pop culture, hip hop is an extremely male dominated field. From the people who partake in it to the audience that listens to it, hip hop seems to be only men. But, as in every field in pop culture, there is a hidden section of women who also partake in hip hop culture. Being one of them, there are things I hear daily when I express my interest in hip hop.

1. Constantly being tested on the history of Hip Hop

Yes, I know who Slick Rick is. I am extremely well educated on the beef between Biggie and 2Pac. And yes, I’ve heard of NWA before Straight Outta Compton came out. As a woman who expresses interest in hip hop, you are asked about the defining moments within its history. It’s always satisfying the see the looks on their faces when you school someone who doubts one of your passions.

2. Being reminded of its flaws

Yes, I am aware of some of the lyrics in hip hop’s most popular songs. They are sexist, degrading, and gross. But, this is not just present in hip hop. Sexism in pop culture is everywhere. You just have to listen and look.

3. People calling it garbage.

To each their own. But I’m not too fond of that country crap you’re blaring either. Also, have you even listened to any hip hop that isn’t on the radio? We’ll talk then.

4. Not being taken seriously.

For some reason, the words “I love hip-hop” causes a fit of laughter from whoever you’re talking to. While you sit there with a stone cold face, they say, “You don’t look like someone who would like hip hop.”

5. Being bonded by mutual love

Whenever you meet someone who shares the same intensity of love for hip hop, you are ultimately tied due to it. You can talk with them for hours, know nothing else about them, but still consider them one of your good friends simply because you like the same music.

Erin is a Communication student at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the President and Editor-in-Chief of UIC's Her Campus chapter. On a daily basis, she can be found making excessive film references and getting overly emotional about superhero TV shows. She has a deep passion for writing, movies, music, good books, and great food, and will gladly talk your ear off about all of the above if prompted to do so.
