Sorry, Stelena. We’re Team Delena

Let’s talk about why Damon Salvatore has had us in a chokehold for almost ten years.

If there’s one debate that will never die in The Vampire Diaries fandom, it’s team Delena versus Stelena. On one side, we have Stefan Salvatore, the sweet, brooding boyfriend who checks all boxes on paper. And on the other? We have the absolute smoke show of man… Damon Salvatore, the sarcastic, morally questionable bad boy with a smirk that could honestly get him out of just about anything. Sorry, Stefan, but we’re going to have to give this one to your brother.

First of all, let’s start off with chemistry. IT WAS UNMATCHED. From the tension-filled arguments to the lingering eye contact, Elena and Damon had us waiting for something to happen every time they were in the same room. Their banter was everything, and somehow, even their arguments had a little too much chemistry. Stelena was cute, but Delena had us kicking our feet, giggling at the screen and replaying scenes like we didn’t have assignments due the next morning. I know you remember.

But beyond the chemistry, Damon challenged Elena in ways that made their relationship so interesting to watch. Stefan represented the sage, familiar life Elena knew before becoming a vampire, while Damon connected with parts of her that were changing. I can admit he wasn’t always the best boyfriend, but their relationship pushed growth for both characters. We all know Damon wasn’t perfect; that’s undeniable, but that’s what made his character so compelling and alluring. Underneath all the sarcasm and questionable decisions was someone who desperately wanted to be loved, even if he hadn’t a clue how to show it sometimes.

Now let’s talk about devotion. Damon was completely down bad for Elena, exactly how it should be. For someone who spent most of the show pretending he didn’t care about anything, Damon sure had a funny way of proving otherwise when it came to her. Damon loved Elena with an intensity that was difficult to overlook. His feelings for her pushed him to imagine a life beyond being the villain in everyone’s story, pushing him to confront the person he had become and the person he wanted to be. At times, was she dramatic? Without a doubt. Does he make questionable decisions? All the time. However, watching him slowly realize that loving Elena meant giving her the freedom to make her own decisions made his character development even more satisfying.

Now, before the Stelena fans jump me, I’ll give Stefan his credit (I guess). Stefan and Elena gave us the classic first love fantasy. Innocent beginnings, tender moments, and the comfort of finding someone who understands you. But sometimes, your first love is just that, your FIRST love, not your last. And you know sometimes it’s your ex-boyfriend’s tortured, mysterious older brother haha..ha..

Anyways, at the end of the day, Team Delena isn’t about pretending Damon was a perfect boyfriend or that every toxic moment was romantic. It’s about the tension, growth, vulnerability beneath all that sarcasm, and a love story that refused to stay predictable. Stefan may have been the safer choice, but Damon was the one who made us feel everything

So, respectfully, Stelena fans, we see your point, but we’ll be over here rewatching Delena’s rain-soaked kisses, iconic one-liners, painfully good chemistry, and defending our favorite problematic vampire. Because if The Vampire Diaries taught us anything, it’s that sometimes the red flag has pretty eyes, a leather jacket, and the last name Salvatore. And honestly? We’re listening.
