Why Is The Bold Type so BOLD?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!

Have you ever seen the commercials for the three girls in a subway station screaming? Then you have seen a commercial for FreeForm’s summer show The Bold Type. The Bold Type follows the lives of Jane (the writer), Kat (social media director), and Sutton (assistant-turned-fashion assistant), who all work for Scarlet Magazine (which is loosely-based off of Cosmopolitan Magazine). When I first saw The Bold Type, I fell in love. People call it the millennials version of Sex and the City (another favorite show of mine). I am not ashamed to say that I have re-watched every single episode in the first season of this new show.  The Bold Type is what it is: BOLD! There are many reasons why this show owns up on the BOLD part:

1. Dynamic Characters

The Bold Type offers many different types of characters that you normally don’t see on typical shows about the magazine business–or on television at all. Jacqueline Carlyle is Scarlet Magazine’s fierce Editor-in-Chief. When you first get introduced to her, you think she is just another Miranda Priestly, but you’re wrong. She is nothing like Miranda Priestly. Jacqueline is the boss you wished you had. She wants you to fall on your face and mess up in life only because it will make you a better person in the end. It’s refreshing to see a character like Jacqueline using her power for good instead of making work hell for her employees. Plus, who else that you know would walk on a treadmill with heels on?

Then you have Adena. Adena is introduced as a photographer who is a Muslim lesbian. When do you ever hear those two together? In my generation, I have never seen a character such as Adena as a character on a television show before.

2. They Do Not Shy Away from the Sex Talk

Normally, it is very taboo for women to talk about sex, let alone sex on TV. This barrier was broken in 1997, when Sex and the City came on television screens. The Bold Type continues this trend, in instances like Jane talking about how she never experienced an orgasm, to having the girls watch porn together. Friends that watch porn together, stay together–right ladies?

3. They Are Woke AF

The Bold Type covers politics, immigration issues and feminism all in the course of the one season of their show. The Bold Type made it important to feature several topics that are in the news every day now, like Muslims being bullied to issues with the gender pay gap. It is a scary day in the world when you have an informed woman on your hands.

4. Queer Storyline

Kat is stated in the beginning of the series has a heterosexual. But after meeting Adena, the two started falling for each other. The couple has to deal with many barriers: Kat’s relationship issues, Adena moving to Paris to try working things out with her girlfriend, and Adena being deported back to her home country. But the season finale shows a lot of potential for #Kadena.

5. Tackle On the Heaviest of Sexual Assault

The season finale dealt with the issue of sexual assault as Jane interviewed a woman who showcased the weights she carried by being a victim of sexual assault, who was failed by the justice system. The most powerful scene was when the fierce Jacqueline comes out to the girls that she too is a victim of sexual assault. Not going to lie, it was hard for me to keep the tears back during this part. Jacqueline, being a victim, symbolizes that even the most confident person we know can have weights that they still carry.

6. Females Supporting Females

The base of this show. I haven’t seen this type of support coming from a friend group since Sex and the City. Jane, Kat and Sutton support each other through thick and thin. Whether it’s having a DNA test to see if they have a gene for breast cancer, to taking a Yoni Ball out of a friend’s vagina. The ladies of The Bold Type are each other’s safety net.

So whip out the wine glasses, get your power poses ready and get ready to meet the ladies of The Bold Type by binge-watching now on either FreeForm or Hulu (preferable in your bathroom tub).
