This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

The biggest night in music is here, and UGA’s campus is excited about the results. Ahead of the show, I asked some UGA students who they thought would win in the general categories and the pop categories to compare them to the actual winners from the show. The 2023 Grammys aired at 8 pm EST on Sunday, February 5.

best pop solo performance

This is an award that goes to the best pop song that was performed by an individual. The award goes only to the individual who performed the song, not the producers, songwriters, or any other collaborators.

  • Predicted: “Easy on Me” by Adele
  • Winner: “Easy on Me” by Adele
Best pop Duo/Group Performance

Like best pop solo performance, this category has the same qualifications, except the pop song must be performed by more than one individual.

  • Predicted: “Unholy” by Sam Smith and Kim Petras
  • Winner: “Unholy” by Sam Smith and Kim Petras
best pop vocal album

Despite the misleading title, this award has nothing to do with an artist’s singing performance on an album. Best pop vocal album goes to the album that best represented the pop genre that year.

  • Predicted: Harry’s House by Harry Styles
  • Winner: Harry’s House by Harry Styles
best new artist

This award goes to the artist who is not only a talented new artist but one who garnered more public attention over the course of the year. Previous winners include artists like Megan Thee Stallion, Olivia Rodrigo, and Billie Elish. Artists like Taylor Swift and Nikki Minaj have lost this award in the past.

  • Predicted: Anitta
  • Winner: Samara Joy
record of the year

This award goes to the most critically well-reviewed song that was heavily embraced by the public. Despite people’s opinions on it now, this song defined the music of that year.

  • Predicted: “As It Was” by Harry Styles
  • Winner: “About Damn Time” by Lizzo
song of the year

This award is for the best-written song of the year. Not only does it have to be successful, but the lyrics need to be strong and impactful. The award only goes to the songwriters of the track.

  • Predicted: “Easy on Me” by Adele/ “All Too Well (Ten Minute Version)” (Taylor’s Version)
  • Winner: “Just Like That” by Bonnie Raitt
album of the year

This goes to the album that had a large impact on the music world that year. It has long been debated whether the award goes to the most commercially successful album (popular and culturally relevant) or the most critically acclaimed album.

  • Predicted: Renaissance by Beyonce
  • Winner: Harry’s House by Harry Styles

UGA students had such a fun time watching the ceremony this weekend! There were definitely some big shocks of the night, but we are so happy for all the winners and nominees!
